HVAC Maintenance Mechanic Level 1

 

Brigham Young University's Housing HVAC & Maintenance Shop operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year.  We ensure the comfortable and safe living environment for 426 Wyview Apartments, 138 Riveria Apartments, 790 Wymount Terrace Apartments, 590 units in Heritage Housing, 1081 units in Helaman Halls, and 26 Language Immersion Student Residence Apartments.  Work provided in these locations include HVAC, plumbing, electrical, appliance / laundry service, preventative maintenance, miscellaneous services, and afterhours emergency response.  We continuously interact with student occupants to create a positive and uplifting environment for them to study and live in.

What you'll do in this position: 

 

Support auxiliary facilities, on-campus housing, and staff and tenants by providing preventive and corrective maintenance as well as response to service requests. 

Maintenance and repair of HVAC systems and associated mechanical, plumbing, and electrical ancillary devices. 

Support Housing Maintenance Mechanics by assisting in general building repairs and troubleshooting. 

Performs preventive checks & maintenance on building HVAC systems, equipment, and controls.

Train & mentor students to ensure that skills and abilities are developed in order to perform routine work.

Respond to after hours emergencies for 1-week periods multiple times per year.

 

What qualifies you for this role:

 

Required

 

A firm commitment to the mission of BYU 

HVAC Training Certification, trade school education, or equivalent experience.

Two (2) years of experience performing HVAC maintenance tasks for multiple building components and systems, including but not limited to controls, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical. 

Have a valid driver's license for day and night driving.

 

Preferred

 

Five (5) years of experience performing HVAC maintenance tasks for multiple building components and systems, including but not limited to controls, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, and refrigerant certified.

Two (2) years of technical training in a related field 

Plumbing, Electrical, and/or Contractor's license

Ability to manage work processes and preventative maintenance scheduling using a computerized maintenance management sys tem.

Excellent interpersonal, communication & organizational skills

Must be an independent worker without the need for constant supervision and be able to make decisions alone.

The starting salary could be higher if a candidate's years of experience and education is higher than typical.

Environment: Periodic exposure to unfavorable conditions. Need to be in variable temperatures or wet environments, etc.

Physical Exam Details: Handles large auger on occasion 

 

Working inside cabinets and other tight places 

 

Heights above ceilings and rooftops 

 

Working with electrical systems 

 

Working with raw sewage 

 

Occasional need to lift panels or equipment in the 20-50 lbs. range. 

 

Rare occasions may require assistance in lifting or manipulation of items heavier than 50 lbs.

Approximate Starting Salary: $55,000 - $71,500
