Collections Manager of Genomic Resources needed in Provo, Utah.

Job Summary

The Collections Manager of Genomic Resources at the Bean Life Science Museum (hereafter MLBM or museum) will be responsible for the overall organization, databasing, maintenance (i.e. curation), and day-to-day operations of the centralized cryogenic facility at the MLBM.   

 

Essential Functions

1. Pre-curation activities: Inventory genomic material stored throughout the museum and compile associated records, notebooks, and electronic files.  Work with faculty curators to centralize all this information for entry into a single database. Work with curators to edit and standardize this information.  Accession newly collected material into the collection.  

 2. Curation activities: Shift genomic products to standardized tubes, arrange tubes in standardized boxes, and organize boxes within racks in ultralow freezers. 

3. Databasing activities: QR-code tubes, enter collection data into a centralized database (i.e., Arctos), data transcription, and museum specimen voucher/tissue/DNA cross-referencing.  Develop a central registry for all genomic products and a formal method to track how genetic resources are accessioned into the collection.

4. Workflow protocols: Based on consultation with other cryogenic collections, develop and update standardized workflows for genomic sample processing, data entry, and database development and management. 

5.* Loans of genomic resources: *Process and track all loans approved by faculty curators.  

6.  Mentoring and Training: Mentor students and direct their work in the genomics facility.  Work with faculty and students to train them on standard protocols for genomic product processing.

7. Maintain Ultralow Freezers: - Responsibility to oversee all ultralow and -20-degree freezers in the MLBM, using electronic monitoring systems to make sure that samples are maintained at correct temperatures. Work with service agents to perform necessary repairs on freezer equipment. 

 

Education/Experience

This position requires strong management and communication skills to effectively manage student workers and students engaged in experiential learning.  The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and to contribute to the strategic missions of the genomic resources facility, the MLBM, and BYU is vital. 

Minimum education/experience required:   A BS in biological sciences and one-year experience working with collections is required. 

Preferred: BS degree with emphasis in bioinformatics or biodiversity and/or MS degree in a program with collection-based activities is preferred. 

 

Skills, abilities, knowledge, licenses, certifications:

Required: Ability to think and operate interpedently. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Strong interpersonal skills for dealing effectively with faculty curators and students.

Preferred: Training in bioinformatics and ability to develop novel workflow procedures/software that will streamline genomic resource curation and databasing. 

Additional Comments

Physical tasks may include moderate lifting.  Samples placed in ultralow freezers require the use of insulated gloves to move in and out of freezer.
