Inventory and Mapping Specialist Resource Assistant

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

Stewards in partnership with the Prescott National Forest is recruiting for this Inventory and Mapping position to assist the forest in mitigating the impacts to natural & cultural resources and recreation in our efforts to implement the Wildfire Crisis Strategy across various landscapes on the Prescott National Forest. The reduction of hazardous fuels has the unintended consequence of allowing motor vehicles to travel many places that were previously blocked by vegetation, thus creating numerous unauthorized travel routes causing public confusion and damage to cultural and natural resources.

This position will map motorized routes in post hazardous fuels treatment areas using GPS and GIS to collect and display the data for decision makers to effectively manage the forest’s motorized travel network. The position will need to be intimately familiar with the use of ESRI’s Field Maps & ArcGIS platforms and have the necessary skills and knowledge to create a working platform for completing the inventories. The inventory component of the position will lead to efforts to sign and rehabilitate unauthorized routes by the position. The position will need to be an effective communicator both orally and written to communicate their findings from the field.

Position Responsibilities will include:

· Working with Fuels Specialist to identify previously treated areas and use shapefiles to make maps

· Identify order of operations where best to start field inventory, collect local knowledge, and use aerial photography to identify unmapped routes

· Identify unauthorized routes using GPS/field maps to record data and pictures while driving through unit

· Hike routes that show light use to prevent putting tracks on newly developed unauthorized routes

· Develop maps or viewer platform for decision makers to review and determine course of action for various unauthorized routes

· Install signage where appropriate

· 4x4 vehicle travel

· Map reading and navigation.

· Day Hiking up to 5 miles

· ArcGIS Pro

· ESRI’s Field Maps

· Email communications.

Minimum Requirements:

· Must have experience with ESRI’s ArcMap and Field Maps

· Must be 18 years or older

· Must have High School Diploma/GED

· Must have or be able to obtain a post-secondary degree by end of service (Associate’s or Higher)

· Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).

· US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident

Preferred Qualifications:

· Outdoor travel experience

· First Aid/CPR or Wilderness First Aid/Responder

· Experience Driving UTVs

· Experience Towing Trailers

*The USFS Resource Assistant Program (RAP) is a rigorous, immersive, paid internship providing developmental and training opportunities for individuals interested in learning more about Forest Service careers. After completing a minimum of 960 hours of satisfactory work and an associate degree, RA’s may acquire a two-year certificate of noncompetitive hiring eligibility. The certificate enables participants to apply to internal merit announcements for qualifying permanent General Schedule FS positions as well as a Direct Hire Authority for FS Career positions.
