Job Summary and Qualifications
Patient Assessment and Referral Services (PARS) clinicians are responsible for all aspects of both telephone and face-to-face crisis intervention/psychiatric triage. They conduct psychiatric assessments which include: history of present illness, family, development, social and medical history, mental status exam; and psychiatric diagnosis. In consult with the on-call psychiatrist, the initial treatment plan, including level of care, is determined. In addition, the PARS clinicians assist with grief consultations as requested by PMC staff. They are also responsible for ongoing resource and referral development activities.
PARS Clinicians work closely with the business office, behavioral health nursing staff, and the Emergency Department staff, coordinating the entire assessment/admission process. For those patients needing alternative services, PARS Clinicians facilitate appropriate disposition (i.e. transfer to another facility, arranging intake appointments).
Essential Functions:
Develops a positive engagement with the caller/patient, which facilitates an accurate interview.
Schedules patients for evaluations, utilizing program-appropriate flow sheets.
Triage phone calls: concise and complete assessments, appropriate follow-up, complete documentation on phone sheets.
Completes assessment in well-written format and in a timely manner.
Performs and documents mental status exam.
Clinical impressions are supported by data.
Demonstrates knowledge of principles of growth and development over the life span and possesses the ability to collect appropriate data, and complete assessments based on the age-specific needs.
Provides information to patients and families regarding specific treatment programs.
Performs functions of an Involuntary Emergency Admission as needed, including acting as petitioner when necessary, and attending/following through with the court system for the hearing.
If appropriate consent is obtained, timely communication with outpatient therapist regarding admission/evaluation.
Works actively with PMC in a liaison capacity around patient evaluations and transfer issues, and provides full psychiatric assessments when requested by the psychiatrist.
Performs assessment, completes paperwork, in a reasonable amount of time.
Consistently consults with a psychiatrist after assessments.
Completes medical clearance section correctly.
Accurately obtains all required consents at time of admission.
Consistently adheres to patient confidentiality rights.
Is knowledgeable of, and practices, all current seclusion and restraint techniques.
Performs assessments in a safe environment.
Obtains informed consent from patients.
Educates patient regarding Patients Rights. Obtains signature that indicates understanding. Gives copy to patient.
Files documents appropriately.
Coordinates transfer of patients from other facilities for admission to the Behavioral Health Unit.
Provides clinical assessments in the Emergency Department as requested.
Along with the Business Office, provides financial assessments for all potential admissions, in order to provide information about both clinical and financial aspects of hospitalization. Works with Utilization to obtain insurance verifications.
Responds to Code Grays as necessary.
Makes report of homicidal patients utilizing Duty to Warn Policy when indicated.
Files abuse reports according to policy as necessary.
Completes daily physician assignment.
Responds to PMC for clinical debriefings and grief work.
Maintains accurate count of available beds through monitoring daily census. Coordinates waiting list if necessary.
Assists on patient unit as requested by PARS Coordinator, Nursing Supervisor, Program Director.
Adheres to unit/hospital standards of documentation.
Completes annual competencies within appropriate time frame.
Protect the confidentiality of information within areas of position responsibilities by preventing unauthorized release, both verbally and/or in writing.
Promote a continuous effort in quality improvement, enhancing the services provided to patients, their families, physicians and members of the surgical services staff by demonstrating positive attitudes and positive actions through a display of courtesy, congeniality, cooperation, sensitivity and professionalism.
Observe all health and safety requirements.
Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed.
Support the theme of service excellence as part of job related activities.

Attendance: works as scheduled and is compliant with Attendance and Tardiness Policy.
Education & Qualifications:
Required: Bachelor’s Degree. AHA or American Red Cross BLS. CPI.
Preferred: Post Graduate Degree
Basic Cardiac Life Support must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
Nonviolent Crisis Intervention must be obtained within 30 days of employment start date
