Amazon Software Development Manager, AWS Elemental in Portland, Oregon

Description

AWS Elemental is an Amazon Web Services company that combines deep video expertise with the power and scale of the cloud. We are looking for a senior Software Development leader to define, build, and ship our strategy for video technologies over the next decade of media innovation.

Our customers cover a wide range of video producers and distributors, from the top global names in Media and Entertainment, enterprise, and MVPDs, as well as the startups who will build the next great video-centric platform to social media sites that rely on AWS Elemental for near-instant video processing. AWS Elemental is central to helping these customers develop new and innovative ways to deliver their content to end users through high quality video encoding, distribution, and monetization.

In this role, you will direct the work of multiple engineering teams with many talents. Your team members will include media software engineers, distributed systems engineers, and quality engineers. Together, you will focus on delivering new functionality, improving the architecture, and operating the most robust cloud transcoding services available. You’ll be challenged and rewarded by building and operating high-scale services that continually raise the bar on video streaming experiences.

Key job responsibilities

  • Lead your team of engineers as they design, implement, and test new features in our products.

  • Act as the technical product owner and work with product management to deliver high impact, high demand features.

  • Provide engineering estimates for candidate features to help with overall team planning.

  • Delight customers by actively managing their issues and delivering timely fixes.

  • Recruit new engineers and mentor existing engineers to grow and develop your team.

  • Identify and clear roadblocks for your team and empower them to do their best.

  • Work with other managers to evolve and optimize our processes.

  • Become an expert on media technologies.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
