The Position
The Bureau of Environmental Services is seeking an intern for their MTL group!
Job Appointment: Casual, Part-Time
Work Schedule: Flexible hours between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM; part-time and full-time opportunities available.
Work Location: Materials Testing Lab 1405 N River St, Portland, OR 97227

Note: This a casual Community Service Aide (CSA III) position with a maximum of 1,400 hours in a calendar year.
The Materials Testing Lab (MTL) provides industry-standard testing and evaluation services for construction materials to ensure that materials used in Environmental Services’ capital projects and other City bureau projects meet national and international standards. The MTL monitors the quality of pipe materials, asphalt mixes, concrete mixes, aggregate, and precast concrete products to ensure that City projects are using appropriate products in the construction of long-term public assets. Testing and monitoring are performed in the laboratory and the field, for samples of actual products at the time of installation. The MTL also provides geotechnical engineering services for bureau and City projects and special inspections as required by local and state building codes.
Roles & Responsibilities Include:
Support completion of geotechnical engineering reports (writing)
Collect geotechnical soil samples and prepare boring logs
Perform field soil classification
Perform field infiltration tests
Read piezometers and inclinometers
Perform field geotechnical construction observations or structure and pavement subgrade, deep foundations, proof rolls on subgrade, ground improvements such as deep soil mixing and jet grouting
Attend design and construction meetings
Use GIS to review geologic, groundwater, seismic hazard maps, enter boring and test pit locations into a layer in GIS, and use GIS to create figures and maps

To Qualify
The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:
Must be a current student or recent graduate in Civil Engineering, Geology or similar studies.
Knowledge of basic computer skills (Excel, Word, Google Maps)
Ability to work in various conditions (outside in all weather, climbing inclines, carrying gear, tools, and sampling equipment, wearing personal protective equipment, etc.)
Ability to perform field work including learning to collect soil samples during a field investigation.
