University of Maine System WMPG Program Director in Portland, Maine

WMPG Community Radio station is seeking a Program Director to oversee the stations’ programming and content.

WMPG (https://www.wmpg.org/) is a Non-Commercial Educational FCC licensed radio station owned by the University of Maine System, and is the premier community radio station of southern Maine. Located on the campus of the University of Southern Maine (USM) in Portland, broadcasting locally, as well as streaming online.

WMPG radio was formed 50 years ago by a handful of students who started making radio in their dorm room on the Gorham campus of the University of Southern Maine (USM). We are USM’s radio station and are housed within the Portland campus. Currently our volunteers are made up of community members, students, and university Staff.

The Program Director (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1uR1xV9Ir9pVNa5_FHTsbCW-1VsufVW5t/view?usp=drive_link) serves as an integral part of the WMPG management team and is involved in all aspects of planning for the station and meeting WMPG’s long-term goals and strategic vision. The Program Director recruits, trains and supervises University of Southern Maine (USM) students and community members as volunteers in on-air radio broadcasting and audio production; manages the program schedule and makes annual changes to keep the programming fresh; maintains the WMPG M usic L ibrary; and connects with the USM community for outreach and engagement to strengthen WMPG’s relationships within USM and the community.

This is a full-time position located on our Portland Campus with an annual salary up to $45,000 commensurate with experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 2 years management and radio experience or equivalent required.

  • Working knowledge of all FCC rules.

  • Demonstrated organizational and communication skills.

  • E xperience working with diverse populations to make WMPG a welcoming s pace for everyone.

  • Strong audio editing skills (Hindenburg, Pro Tools, Adobe Audition, Audacity).

  • Non-profit radio experience and an understanding of a college/community radio station environment.

  • Working knowledge of the principles of journalism and the ethics of communication.
