Cleveland Clinic PRN Speech Pathologist- Pediatrics in Port Saint Lucie, Florida

  • Provide support and advice to the child's parents and teachers about every angle of their care that has to do with the occupational therapy needs of the child.

  • Adjust communication pattern to the age and level of understanding of the child. This may sometimes include no-verbal means of communication like sign language.

  • Attend meetings when needed to provide specialist advice as regards the functional needs of the child.

  • Vigilant at all times to ensure and maintain a safe environment for the child.

  • Plans further treatment and review the child's general progress.

  • Work closely with doctors, family members, and teachers of the child by keeping them updated on his/her progress.

  • Assess the child for adaptations and use of specialist equipment when necessary.

  • Identify areas of improvement in the entire procedure and help in managing adaptive changes in ways through which services are rendered to the child.

  • Must possess good communication skills on all fronts. There might be need for extra communication skills like sign language and facial expressions (depending on the challenges being faced by the child in question).

  • Must have good interpersonal skills. That is to say that the pediatric speech pathologist must be a people person who is always at ease and friendly when relating with people, especially with the child being cared for.

  • Must exhibit high levels of patience and tolerance when handling the child.

  • Must possess good analytical and problem-solving abilities.

  • Must be someone that pays keen attention to every little detail about the child. That is to say that the therapist must be aware of every relevant detail that has to do with the child's environment and well-being in general.

  • Must display flexibility (especially in the case of different children). This is due to the fact that every child may not have the same difficulties, hence, might not respond to the same therapy procedure.

Speech Pathologist's evaluate patients and applies a wide variety of therapeutic techniques for the rehabilitation of patients with functional limitations, impairments and disorders.

A caregiver in this position works a day/evening shift based on the needs of the department.

A caregiver who excels in this role will:

  • Provides, interprets, plans and supervises patient evaluations and treatments in accordance with the physician referral, ensuring the care, safety and well being of the patient.

  • Continually reviews the plan of care and makes revisions as needed.

  • Prepares progress reports on all treatments in conjunction with departmental policies and procedures and reports to physician as needed.

  • Instructs and counsels medical staff and family members to assist the patient in treatment techniques.

  • Performs voice evaluations and treatment of various voice disorders. and bedside swallow evaluations.

  • Demonstrates competency with the MBS's for adults and pediatrics.

  • Follows Code Blue protocol as per Clinic policy.

  • Adheres to National Patient Safety Goals as outlined by JCAHO.

Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Masters, Doctorate or SLP-D Degree from an accredited school of Speech-Language Pathology. Registered in the State of Florida.

  • Possess license in the State of Florida. Possess ASHA certification.

  • Must hold or be eligible for a Speech-Language Pathology License (SP) from the State Board of Speech-Language Pathology & Audiology.

  • Must hold (SP) license in current state upon start date.

  • Holds Certification of Clinical Competence (CCC-SLP) from the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

  • Externship experience required

Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:

  • Experience working in a healthcare or clinical setting preferred.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work is medium/frequent lifting and carrying equipment, supplies and materials up to 50 pounds without help of mechanical devices or other personnel. Stooping, pushing and pulling when moving patients or equipment into position for treatment. Reaching for, handling, feeling and manipulation of equipment and patients.

  • Talking and hearing to convey instruction and information to patient and staff member.

  • Visual acuity to perceive reactions to treatment and to follow or read instruction. The occupant of this position spends 98% of his/her time in air-conditioned areas the remainder in outside areas.

  • The potential for exposure to blood and blood-borne pathogens is present while completing clinical duties.

  • This position requires reasoning, mathematical and English language skills.

  • Ability to work at a fast pace and to prioritize multiple assignments/projects and respond to numerous requests; ability to resolve conflicts among staff and to work collaboratively with other members of the healthcare team.
