The Farmer is responsible for the success of the operations of the hospital-based farm related to crop production, produce sales, safety and aesthetics of the site, and managing the day-to-day work of volunteers and interns. The Farmer is to ensure that policies and practices are implemented in alignment with organizational goals and values. The Farmer will oversee intensive crop production on our farm sites, expand our program offerings, and will support programs led by other farm staff, all in support of community well-being. This position will report to the Farm Program Manager with a dotted line reporting relationship to local CHWB management.

The Farm at Trinity Health Hospital Oakland is a 1.5-acre space, adjacent to the hospital, and creates a unique opportunity to provide access to education, local fresh produce, and therapeutic gardens to the patients, community and staff. There are three distinct zones on the site: healing gardens, community gardens, and urban farm.

REQUIRED EDUCATION / LICENSURE

  • Education:

  • Minimum: High school diploma

  • Preferred: Associates degree in sustainable agriculture or related fields.

  • Minimum: 2 years of experience

  • Preferred: Combination of 3-5 years of experience with farm management, crop production, sales or other related fields.

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum: Strong knowledge of crop planning, soil management, organic crop production, and personnel management.

  • Ability to use hand tools, small machines, and tractors.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons in a physically active roll. Knowledge of vegetable sales, effective management of money.

  • Preferred: Strong knowledge of no-till crop production. Experience with sales and marketing. Strong written and verbal communication skills. 2+ years of experience with youth education, intern or volunteer coordination.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Manages the annual planning and implementation of year-round sustainable crop production to support the Farms' weekly farmers market; Farm Share (CSA) program; Produce-to-Patients program; and education activities. Includes crop planning, financial reporting, material purchase and management, pest management, soil management, harvesting, working with 2-and 4-wheel tractor, and post-harvest handling.

  • Responsible for day-to-day supervision and communication with volunteers and interns. Position is responsible for safety of volunteers while at the Farm and for providing a meaningful, educational experience for community members of all backgrounds and abilities.

  • Maintain facilities and equipment for safety and ease of use.

  • Manages the weekly farmers market for staff and community members. Coordinates development and execution of supplemental educational programming and engagement for market patrons.

  • Manages receipt, storage and distribution of food for various farm programs.

  • Designs, creates, and maintains spaces at Farm to promote youth engagement and education, including crops planted specifically for use in youth education programming, in coordination with Program Manager.

  • Designs, creates, and maintains spaces at Farm to promote engagement and education of visitors.

  • Promote efficacy of programming and production through data collection and evaluation.

  • Increases visibility of farm through tours, public speaking, and written materials.

  • Create, implement, and manage a comprehensive food safety plan
