Description:

POSITION PURPOSE

Responsible for collecting, analyzing, and reporting clinical data elements for MACS (Michigan Acute Care Surgery) eligible cases as required for participation in the Michigan Acute Care Surgery Program, a Blue Cross Blue Shield/Blue Care Network of Michigan- funded Quality Initiative.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Registered Nurse (BSN) or equivalent (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant);

  • Current RN Licensure in Michigan.

  • Five years minimum of clinical experience as a Registered Nurse or equivalent (Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant); surgery experience preferred.

  • Previous experience with data abstraction from medical records, and or analyzing and interpreting processes of care, and clinical outcomes is preferred.

  • Other required skills include excellent written and verbal communication as well as working knowledge of computer software (Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and trauma registry applications.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Works collaboratively with the acute care surgery staff, clinical staff, and the trauma program manager to collect and submit reliable data to MACS in a timely manner.

  2. Identifies opportunities for clinical quality improvement and other special projects as requested by the MACS Coordinating Center.

  3. Attends consortium-wide meetings and data abstractor meetings as a representative of the institution, acting as a resource regarding the consortium within their institution.

  4. Maintains regular contact with MACS surgical champion(s) and other members of the surgery team at the institution.

  5. Prepares for and is available for site audits by the MACS Coordinating Center

  6. Resolves data discrepancies and responds to the MACS Coordinating Center requests in a timely fashion. Analyzes compares and evaluates various courses of action and has the authority to make independent decisions on matters of significance, free from immediate direction, within the scope of their responsibilities.

  7. Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships. Approaches conflict in a constructive manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.

  8. Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, associates, and visitors to St. Joseph Mercy Health System. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.

  9. Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of SJMHS.

  10. Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
