The role of a Pipe Fabrication Shop Leaderman is critical in overseeing the operations of the fabrication shop to ensure smooth and efficient pipe fabrication in a refinery setting. This role requires a highly organized and experienced individual who can balance technical skills with leadership, ensuring both the quality of work and a safe, productive environment for the team.
Responsibilities May Include:
Supervising a team of welders and pipefitters by providing leadership and guidance for daily operations, ensuring high performance, compliance with safety standards, and quality workmanship
Leading the training process for new pipefitter apprentices, ensuring they are well-versed in the shop’s procedures and safety protocols
Ensuring proper coordination between fabrication and inspection to maintain quality control
Supervising the segregation of alloy materials to ensure proper handling and usage according to industry and company standards
Ensuring that specialty tools, such as hot tap machines, end prep tools, and pipe bevelers, are properly maintained and available for use
Conducting daily inspections of shop equipment like forklifts and overhead cranes to ensure they meet safety standards
Calculating and verifying the accurate pipe run cut lengths based on provided drawings
Reviewing drawings carefully and identifying any discrepancies or issues that may affect the fabrication process
Ensuring safe and efficient handling of materials when moving them in and out of the shop
Checking the received pipe fittings against specific piping packages to ensure correctness and compliance with specifications
Verifying the metallurgy of the pipe and fittings to ensure proper materials are used
Accurately cutting and preparing the pipe to verified lengths as indicated on the drawings
Preparing and fitting the pipe and fittings in preparation for welding, ensuring precise alignment for the welding team
Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
High school degree or GED equivalent
Experience in managing pipefitting and welding operations in an industrial or refinery setting
Ability to ensure all tasks meet company and industry standards, executed on time to support maintenance, turnaround, and project schedules.
Must be willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to comply with the following:
Travel up to 5% of the time
Occasional on-call duties
Work extended hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and holidays
Transport articles up to 50 pounds
Work safely near large, hot, high-speed machines
Climb ladders and stairs up to 200 feet in height
Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
Work around hydrocarbons under high pressure and heat
Work outside in harsh weather conditions
Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
Maintain face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong leadership and management skills for overseeing a small team
Expertise in reading and interpreting pipe fabrication drawings
Knowledge of metallurgy, material handling, and pipe welding
Proficiency in using and maintaining specialty tools and equipment in the shop
Understanding of safety, quality control, and operational procedures in the refinery context
The Ponca City Refinery is located in Ponca City, Oklahoma, approximately 95 miles northwest of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, medium and heavy crude oil delivered via pipeline from Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, the U.S. Rockies and Canada. Infrastructure improvements have enabled the delivery of locally produced crude oil by pipeline and truck. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and anode-grade petroleum coke. Refined products are primarily distributed to customers by company-owned and common carrier pipelines to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
