Southern California Edison Subtransmission Engineer 1 [HYBRID] in Pomona, California

Job Description

Become a Subtransmission Engineer 1 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow. In this job, you’ll be a part of the Northern Subtransmission Planning team under the Subtransmission Planning Analysis (SPA) group within SCE’s System Planning & Engineering (SP&E) organization. You will work on high-impact programs such as the Transmission Substation Plan (TSP), Method of Service Requests, and Generation Interconnection Requests, and will provide recommendations to address technical issues related to the subtransmission systems to ensure the reliability and resiliency of SCE’s grid. You will focus on developing SCE’s forecasted 10-year SP&E System Plans and Generator Interconnection Requests that are filed with the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) and/or California System Operator (CAISO).

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart, and shine bright!

  • Perform TSP technical assessments on the subtransmission system and evaluate results while complying with applicable standards, criteria, business best practices, and guidelines.

  • Sponsor projects needed to correct violations of applicable criteria due to system changes resulting from a variety of factors.

  • Perform technical assessments needed to interconnect new generation resources under the Wholesale Distribution Access Tariff (WDAT) and Rule 21 Tariff to support regulatory compliance.

  • Support technical report writing on studies performed to document findings.

  • Support project development activities, such as interconnection agreement negotiations, permitting and licensing, engineering design and construction, and operations related to new subtransmission projects.

  • Develop management briefings/presentations on technical issues and recommend a course of action.

  • Review real-time power system issues and associated mitigation plans to ensure the viability of the plan and ultimately system reliability and resiliency.

  • Review and recommend action on Secondary Land Use requests.

  • Maintain a safety-conscious work environment by following Edison’s safety protocols and safe work practices in addition to providing support with all other duties assigned.

The Essentials

  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Electrical Engineering or Electrical and Computer Engineering (recent graduate or will graduate by the end of December 2024)

The Preferred

  • California Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.) or Professional Engineering License

  • Experience in the area of power system engineering analysis including knowledge of applicable regulations, standards, codes, and power flow software such as PSLF/CYME or Short Circuit Duty analysis and software such as CAPE.

  • Experience analyzing and solving engineering problems and making sound decisions.

  • Ability to explain technical concepts to an audience with varying levels of understanding.

  • Experience preparing detailed engineering studies and reports.

  • Experience delivering technical presentations.

  • Experience using Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and Visio

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex technical concepts in simple terms to both technical and non-technical personnel, including internal and external customers.

  • Ability to influence others and maintain positive working relationships.

  • Ability to resolve conflicts in a manner that results in win-win solutions for all the parties involved.

  • Ability to stay current with relevant technology and innovation.

  • Strong ethics and the ability to effectively manage stress and engage in continuous learning.

You should know…

  • Work Mode \: This position’s work mode is hybrid . The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days. Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.

  • This position will require 5 to 10% travel for site/field visits across the SCE Service Territory.

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to the assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
