Summary

The Gear Design Engineer leads the design and development of geared assemblies for military, commercial, and industrial applications. The primary focus of this position is to analysis gear, spline, and bearing life to customer specified duty cycle. If a subsystem duty cycle is not available, the decomposition of vehicle performance requirements may be required to determine component life. Additionally, this position requires analyzing other gearbox design features such as seals, fasteners, fluids, and other features common to gearbox functionality.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; however, other duties may be assigned.

  • Lead design analysis of complex geared assemblies in accordance with the Loc Product Development Process (LPDP).

  • Utilize ISO 6336 and AGMA standards for designing and analyzing gear capabilities and limitations.

  • Provide guidance for technical project execution with other engineers and designers.

  • Document analyses for meeting all gearbox functional performance requirements.

  • Develop plan for validating design to customer requirements.

  • Design/optimize gear profiles at a macro and/or micro level to meet customer specified performance and life requirements.

  • Specify bearings, seals, and other required gearbox components to meet performance and life requirements.

  • Provide necessary analysis documentation supporting design reviews to assure designs meet functional intent.

  • Support test plan execution and reporting, including Root Cause Corrective Action (RCCA) documentation.

  • Support prototype and production manufacturing and assembly.

  • Analyze test data and reports to determine if design meets performance specifications.

  • Ensures form, fit, and function of complex mechanical system concepts.

  • Supports the preparation of design review meetings.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.M.E.) Minimum.

  • Minimum of 5+ years of work experience designing gears or gearbox assemblies.

  • Direct experience with KissSoft design analysis software or equivalent gear analysis software.

  • Direct experience with ANSYS design analysis software or equivalent for performing FEA structural analyses.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.

  • Ability to effectively present information in English and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

  • Must understand complex mathematical relationships that underpin the analyses for static, dynamic, fatigue, vibration, shock, and other forms of analyses as required for the design and development of complex geared systems.

Computer Skills

  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Design software; Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.

  • Perform gear fatigue analysis using KissSoft or equivalent.

  • Build 3-D models using CAD (Pro/e CREO preferred) data and/or imported data.
