Medical Oncology

Full Time

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) d elivers medical care to a wide variety of patients. The APRN also e xamines and treats patients independently and in autonomous collaboration with other health care professionals. Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. May prescribe medications and order diagnostic tests. Advises patients about continuing care.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs and documents complete physical examinations and comprehensive health histories .

    Functions independently to perform age-appropriate history and physical for patients.

  • Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient’s age-specific needs.

  • Prescribes appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment modalities

  • Implements interventions to support the patient to regain or maintain physiologic stability .

  • Assists with the provision of care in accordance with facility, state, and federal regulations.

  • Monitors the effectiveness of interventions.

  • Facilitates the patient’s transition within and between health care settings, e.g. admitting, transferring, and discharging patients.

  • Collaborates with multidisciplinary team members by making appropriate referrals .

  • Facilitates staff, patient and family decision making by providing educational tools.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

    ​ SURVIVORSHIP PROGRAM FUNCTIONS

  • Initiate the Survivorship Care Plan (SCP) at the patient’s first clinic visit.

  • A ssesses the physical and psychosocial status of clients by means of interview, health history, physical examination, and diagnostic studies.

  • Assess early and late effects of treatments.

  • Provides ongoing educations regarding recent and prior chemotherapy regimens.

  • Discusses other treatment related effects from surgery, radiation, etc.

  • Refers to appropriate disciplines for management of late effects of treatment.

  • Shares Survivorship Care Plan with patient’s primary care provider and other requested providers.

  • Assess and follow consult patients when required and independently of physician when needed.

  • Interprets and evaluates findings of studies/tests and intervenes accordingly.

  • Assures patients have follow-up appointments with their treating physicians prior to discharge

  • Evaluates the quality of care provided and recommends changes for improvement.

  • Initiates appropriate actions to facilitate the implementation of therapeutic plans that are consistent with the continuing healthcare needs of the clients, including support services.

  • ​ Answers patient-related inquiries via telephone, Uchart In- basket , etc.

  • Assists in the management of family dynamics and coping mechanisms during acute and chronic phases of patient care.

  • Conducts or participates in the Survivorship Committee and other related activities/meetings and ensures appropriate and quality care for patients.

  • Ensure that the Survivorship clinic runs smoothly and efficiently and correspond s with collaborating physicians and patients to provide holisitic care for patients.

  • Identifies gaps that can be improved and further developed with Survivorship Committee and Cancer Center leadership.

  • Able to communicate effectively and provide updates to the Cancer Survivorship team.

    HI GH RISK CLINIC FUNCTIONS

  • Participate in the creation of a high risk and lifestyle risk reduction clinic.

  • Perform the duties as outlined in core description as an APRN when seeing patients in this clinic

  • Conducts comprehensive high-risk cancer assessment, including family risk assessment as well as determine physical, mental, and social needs present at the time of visit.

  • Participates in the education of cancer prevention clinical trials if applicable.

  • Participated in in-service training and education and educational program for community outreach regarding health and promotion.

  • Refers patients to internal, community, and national resources for care.

  • Assists in the development of patient based programs that will provide education for patients in the community and at Sylvester.

    CORE QUALIFICATIONS

    Education:

    Master’s d egree in relevant field

    Certification and Licensing:

    Valid State of Florida APRN License

    Graduate of Master in Science of Nursing or higher curriculum.

    Board certification as APRN from nationally accredited organization such as American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)

    Current Certification in BLS and ACLS

    DEA license

    CITI certification within three months of employment

    ONS Chemotherapy and Biotherapy certification on hire or during orientation

    Experience:

    Minimum 2 years of relevant experience .

    Preferred 2 years of experience in treating hematology/oncology patients.

  • AOCNP certification within one year of employment

  • Maintains national certification

  • Attend monthly educational grand rounds or relevant educational in-house meeting
