UPMC Supervisor, Laboratory - Magee Women's Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

UPMC is hiring a full-time Laboratory Supervisor to join their Andrology and Fertility lab at Magee Women's Hospital! The Andrology and Fertility Preservation Laboratory offers a full range of special tests and services to diagnose and treat male infertility. We also offer fertility preservation options for people at risk of infertility due to a disease, medical treatment, age, or other circumstances. Through joint agreements, we provide tissue freezing for children and adults at risk of infertility across the country.

In addition to the supervisor job duties, the supervisor will play a crucial part in the mission of the fertility preservation program. This entails working directly with lab leadership and the research team to bring new diagnostic and clinical services into the laboratory.

Hours for this position will be primarily Monday through Friday, daylight hours with some on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Assess capital needs and insure adequate funding for these needs. Ensure budgets are completed and submitted on time. Provide explanations for budget variances.

  • Participate in QI activities, identify issues to monitor and drives the QI process. Offer constructive ideas, challenge the status quo and question assumptions. Provide a safe work environment. Ensure that all staff receives safety and compliance training and other training as needed.

  • Monitor actions of laboratory staff, coach and generate disciplinary action when appropriate. Ensure that staff is fairly treated. Arbitrate disputes between staff members. Delegate tasks as appropriate and coordinate efforts in order to meet goals. Ensure staff adherence to UPMC policy.

  • Promote positive interdisciplinary relations and ensure ongoing problem solving to ensure quality patient care services. Participate in committees, specialty work groups and task forces as appropriate. Provide feedback to patient unit directors and other customers. Receive and investigate all complaints concerning the laboratories and personnel and takes action when necessary. Discuss issues with the Medical Director and supervisors as appropriate to determine potential causes and agreed upon solutions.

  • Participate in decisions on equipment selection and purchase and ensure financial feasibility studies are complete before purchase. Ensure the laboratory meets regulatory guidelines, including licensing requirements and CAP requirements. Participate in the development and implementation of procedures and provide input to the goals and policies of the laboratory. Provide professional advice and direction to laboratory personnel concerning the more complex/sensitive tests and problems encountered. Adapt methods and equipment to correct problems.

  • Establish both short and long term goals for the labs. Assess laboratory operations and helps in the development of plans to improve the department's effectiveness and service. Develop annual capital and operating budgets and manage all budgets in accordance with established budgetary guidelines. Need to plan for the upcoming fiscal year in cooperation with the administrative director.

  • Assure a highly professional and motivated staff that supports a service management environment through the selection, development, direction and evaluation of subordinate personnel. Recruit, interview and selects personnel for roles within the laboratories. Ensure that new employees are properly oriented and trained. Provide for other human resource management activities such as performance evaluations. Coach and advise employees on their performance.

  • Establish appropriate monitoring and control systems and policies/procedures to ensure the laboratories are achieving strategic goals. Monitor productivity of the labs based on information provided by the Management Reporting System and Fiscal.

  • Ensure compliance with the UPMC philosophy and mission of service excellence. Create and maintain a customer-oriented and service excellence environment. Foster and reinforce collaborative and collegial relationships and a positive work environment. Utilize independent judgment and discretion in the conduct of activities.

  • Establish and maintain productive communication networks with all areas inside and outside the hospital. Act as liaison to other departments. Interact with clinicians and nursing staff. Perform special projects as assigned by the Administrative Director and the Medical Director. Pursue a program of self-development. Remain abreast of developments in the field of management and laboratory science.

B.S. degree from an accredited college/university and successful completion of a CAHEA accredited Medical Technology program and certification as a Medical Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) within 2 years from hire date.

OR

A B.S. degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science AND categorical certification for the specific specialty by the ASCP.

OR

A B.S. degree from an accredited college/university with a major in biological, chemical, physical or clinical laboratory science.

OR

A successfully completed the HEW (HHS) proficiency examination and 6 years of experience as a Medical Technologist.
