Overall Purpose:

Under semi-direct supervision, performs skilled work pertaining to the repair, test and maintenance of watthour meters, transformers and other electrical and mechanical equipment in the shop and field.

Job Responsibilities :

Inspects, adjusts, repairs, tests, and maintains meters, instrument transformers; and some types of instruments and relays. Assembles and wires power meter installations and enclosures and makes necessary operating tests on such equipment.

Makes routine inspections of single and three phase motors, storage batteries, electric trucks, lawn mowers, portable gas driven generators and similar items to determine operating condition and maintenance requirements.

Dismantles and reassembles transformers, removes and rebuilds cores and coils, reconditions terminal boards, tap changers and bushings and performs painting operations. Connects and operates oil-handling equipment.

Performs routine testing and checking of power, distribution, power center and subway transformers, such as ratio, resistance power factor and meggering, and assists in making special tests such as copper losses, iron losses and heat runs.

Performs maintenance operations on power circuit breakers of all types and sizes, such as, disassemble ing and assembling breaker mechanisms, replacing parts, shop assembly checking of current transformers, installing dash pots, and routine testing.

Inspects and tests rubber protective equipment such as gloves, sleeves and hoses. Maintains line materials, including sheave blocks, coffing hoists, miscellaneous distribution tools, bolt cutters and linemen safety belts. Prepares and winds coils for certain types of electrical equipment.

Prepares distribution centers and switch gear cubicles for installation.

Performs routine drilling and punching light metal parts in drill presses and punch presses and similar operations. Works from prints or sketches and makes sketches of parts to be fabricated or repaired.

Prepares routine test reports and maintains records related to assigned duties. May use computer terminal or P.C. in connection with assigned work.

Performs simple burning, soldering and brazing operations.

Performs all work in a safe manner and maintains equipment and working areas in a clean and orderly condition. Performs other work related to the above as required or directed.

May be required to drive a car or light truck to pick up and/or deliver materials and equipment. Occasionally required to drive forklift trucks.

Instructs other shop mechanics and lesser classifications when assigned.

Education / Experience Requirements :

Requires education equivalent to graduation from high school.

Two years’ experience in repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment including one year as a shop helper.

Must pass the company administered standardized aptitude test (CAST)

Must hold a valid driver's license.
