The Human-Computer Interaction Institute (HCII) is a living laboratory where we investigate the relationship between computer technology, human activity, and society. Founded in 1993, the HCII is a place where we work to understand and create technology that harmonizes with and improves human capabilities, goals, and social environments through interdisciplinary research and education in design, computer science, and behavioral and social sciences. We research how people work, play and communicate within groups, organizations, and social structures, then we design, create, and evaluate technologies and tools to support human and social activities.

The HCII is looking for a Research Associate to contribute to our IES-funded project "Optimizing AI-based tutoring software for middle-school mathematics on smartphones." The Research Associate will be guided by professors Vincent Aleven, Ken Koedinger, and Paulo Carvalho in Carnegie Mellon's Human-Computer Interaction Institute.

Our project explores three approaches to supporting middle-school math homework with AI-based tutoring software: Data-optimizing the tutoring software, making it run on mobile phones (so students have more opportunities to work on their homework) and involving parents in their children's homework and supporting them in doing so with newly crafted parent support features. Core responsibilities include: Organize and conduct in classroom studies to test the effects on student homework completion, learning of the different components and of the system as a whole Analyze data from classroom studies. Maintains accurate and detailed research records and files. Performs library research and field explorations Performs related duties as assigned.

You should demonstrate: Affinity for education technology research Experience in conducting experimental studies in education or in other areas Ability to understand and follow directives and assignments.Qualifications: High School Diploma/GED Bachelor's degree in human-computer interaction, cognitive science, cognitive psychology, education technologies, learning sciences, or a related field. Expertise in or experience with the analysis of quantitative data from research studies. Experience with K-12 classroom research involving education technology. Experience with user research methods and qualitative research methods, including analysis of qualitative (e.g., analysis of interview data or data from open-ended survey questions). A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.Requirements Successful background investigationAdditional Information: Typical Work Schedule: Monday-Friday from 8:30-5:00pm. Evening and weekend hours will be required on occasion.
