https://www.geology.pitt.edu/invites applications for a Research Assistant Professor position focused on planetary science, remote sensing, and volcanological modeling.

The hire will work closely with the research group of Professor Michael Ramsey on a new NASA Solar System Workings-funded project to understand the rates and conditions of active lava flow emplacement on Venus. Other areas of research could entail thermophysical modeling of Mars, which is funded through the Mars Odyssey Participating Scientists Program. Some level of teaching and mentoring of students may also be part of the candidate's portfolio.

This appointment has an anticipated start date of September 1, 2024, and lasts approximately two years, depending on the continuation of external funding.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  1. Modeling Venusian lava flows, interpreting their morphology, deriving their emplacement rates and conditions, and forecasting future flow conditions.

  2. Analysis of thermal infrared data of Mars including thermophysical modeling, lava flow modeling, and integration of new off-axis thermal infrared data into future studies.

  3. Publishing all results in the peer-reviewed literature.

  4. Leading and/or contributing to the development and execution of grant proposals.

  5. Contributing to all ongoing lab-focused projects, including those apart from the research areas mentioned here.

  6. Assist with (or lead) course teaching depending on the candidate's future interests.

The successful candidate will:

Have expertise in satellite image analysis, planetary data, and knowledge of Venus and Mars geology.

Have strong skills in lava flow modeling, thermophysical modeling, working with large datasets, and data analysis/reduction techniques.

Have a deep understanding of volcanology, igneous processes, lava flow morphology, and lava flow emplacement.

Maintain and organize training data, python code, and derived data products.

Minimum qualifications for the Research Assistant Professor position include:
