Radiation Safety Technologist

 

Radiation Safety at the University of Pittsburgh is responsible for ensuring that all sources of licensed radioactive material and ionizing radiation-producing equipment are used optimally and safely.

The Radiation Safety Technologist will perform surveys on various X-ray equipment, conduct radiation surveys in clinical Nuclear Medicine Departments and PET Facility, perform air monitoring, audits of gamma cell irradiators, and prepare hospital rooms for Iodine-131 therapies. Employee will also be involved in radioactive waste surveys, packaging, and preparation for disposal.

Other duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducts radiation monitoring, source leak tests, and surveys for radioactive contamination.
  • Monitors use and maintains various types of radiation-related equipment, including providing training on use of equipment.
  • Collects and analyzes data surrounding radiation and radioactive materials.
  • Prepares relevant reports for safety and departmental purposes.
  • Inspects radiological use facilities and confirms proper safety procedures are in effect.
  • Ensures compliance with all regulatory requirements to protect the health and safety of the University and its members.
  • Monitors the shipping, processing, and disposal procedures of radioactive materials. Job Summary

Essential Functions

Working with computers, database entry, email, correspondence, telephone communications, retrieval of records, and follow-up.

Physical Effort

The position will require extensive travel on campus to survey labs and meet with investigators and the ability to lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.
