POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for supporting the planning, management and completion of sustainability or resilience projects on a variety of local government business units and civic engagement programs. Works with stakeholders to develop project plans, outreach and integration of sustainability and resilience approaches into operations. Provides analytic capabilities to improve decision support for upper level management, maintains agile networks of action that strengthen city-wide climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts.

Qualifying Requirements :

Your City of Pittsburgh application will be reviewed and your work experience and education/training will be evaluated to determine if you meet the qualifying eligibility requirements listed below for this position. You will be sent an eligibility letter regarding your eligible/ineligible status.

  • WORK EXPERIENCE: The application must clearly show three (3) years of full-time work experience in advocacy on sustainability. (Less than full-time experience will be calculated on a pro-rated basis.)

  • EDUCATION/TRAINING: The application must clearly show a Bachelor's Degree from a fully accredited institution in Sustainability, Environmental Management, Planning, Urban Design, or a related field (Master's Degree preferred.). (See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

  • EQUIVALENCY: Education/training and/or work experience may be substituted on a year for year basis if the application clearly shows the required number of years to meet the Total Qualifying Requirement for this position (based on the sum of work experience and education/training listed above). The Total Qualifying Requirement is seven (7) years. ( See NOTE under the General Application Requirements Section above regarding the verification of education/training).

CIVIL SERVICE EXAMINATIONS

You must pass the written and/or performance examination(s) in order to have your name placed on the official Civil Service eligibility list for this position. Candidates who receive job offers must pass a medical examination (when applicable) prior to start date.

POSITION DUTIES

  • Manages the City of Pittsburgh's Climate Action Plan and staff towards the City’s mitigation goals, developing long-range and short-term initiatives for the implementation of the Plan and coordinates with other relevant programs.

  • Manages and directs the work of staff and/or consultant team retained to support Sustainability and Resilience planning projects; assists in the selection of project consultant.

  • Manages collaboration with local and national organizations working on climate to maximize impact and federal investment locally.

  • Supports other departments or divisions with project management related to Sustainability and Resilience as needed.

  • Meets regularly with City departments to support/inform departmental climate goals and actions.

  • Serves as key point of contact with community organizations working on climate action.

  • Tracks City progress toward achievement of climate goals as laid out in the Climate Action Plan.

  • Completes sustainability and/or resilience projects as directed within schedule and budget.

  • Works with City and external partners to update the Climate Action Plan.

  • Works with OMB to provide assessments of the climate impact of annual budget proposals.

  • Works with Mayor’s government affairs staff to track and advocate on state and federal legislation that impacts the City’s climate goals.

  • Coordinates City participation in state and national climate initiatives and rankings.

  • Works with communication staff in City Planning and Mayor’s office to publicize City climate actions.

  • Educates city stakeholders and the local community on the importance of addressing climate change.

  • Performs activities and functions of related personnel.

  • Performs other related tasks and duties as assigned or required.
