RJ Lee Group Inc Junior Concrete Petrographer in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

RJ Lee Group, Inc. is currently seeking an entry level Geologist interested in being trained in the growing field of concrete petrography.  The ideal candidate will have a strong background in aggregate petrography with a solid education in thin section evaluation of rocks and minerals.  Experience creating thin sections is preferred.  The position will work under experienced concrete petrographers to learn and assume responsibilities of preparing samples and performing petrographic examinations of concrete, cementitious based materials and aggregates.  The Junior Concrete Petrographer will learn to carry out investigations of concrete and aggregate according to ASTM C856, ASTM C1723, ASTM C457, ASTM C295, ASTM C1324 and other standard or novel methods.  This position will include use of a stereo-optical microscope, polarized light microscope, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS).  The candidate will be expected to support efforts within the company in other related areas and collaborate with scientists both within the organization as well as academic and industry partners.

Our concrete petrographic investigations support engineering evaluation of concrete structures and material failure investigations.  It is a growing area with excellent growth potential.  This is a field in which you can expect lifelong learning and establish a wide range of analytical laboratory knowledge to solve problems. 

Responsibilities:

  • Learn and perform cementitious material sample preparation techniques, compressive strength testing, and other concrete laboratory procedures
  • Learn and perform petrographic and material analyses of cement-based construction materials and natural rock products
  • Apply advanced analytical techniques such as SEM/EDS, XRD, XRF, thermal methods and others to problem solve for clients

Qualifications:

  • B.S. or M.S. in Geology or Physical Science, or Civil Engineering
  • Course work or other training in optical mineralogy
  • Intellectual curiosity, problem-solving abilities, and strong motivation to learn
  • Ability to work independently or with a team and to prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule when required to meet project needs
  • Good communication and writing skills
  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office Suite of software and image collection and processing tools
