Duquesne Light Company Engineer I - Protection in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Under direct supervision, the Engineer III – Protection performs protection-related activities for projects of moderate complexity in the assigned electrical engineering field for the safe, reliable and effective installation and operation of facilities.

Location: Hybrid, downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Responsibilities:

  • Create and reviewprotection recommendations, perform short circuit studies and relay coordination studies, investigate proper relay operation during faults, provide relay settings, investigate protection conditions, etc. for projects of moderative complexity.

  • Ensure that all recommendations meet all applicable federal, state and local engineering codes, including (NESC, NEC, ANSI, and IEEE) as well as DLC Standards. Review with engineering management before issuing recommendations.

  • Provide studies, engineering, design and technical support to help implement work performed in a cost-effective manner by DLC Operations and outside consulting personnel.

  • Proactively prepare recommendations and implement changes that will upgrade facilities, improve reliability of DLC System and/or DLC Standards/materials.

  • Support industry changes and changes in equipment performance, legislation, codes, regulations, standards, and safety practices relevant to the company’s system condition assets and ensure the assets are up to date.

  • Prepare reports, presentations, and other documentation for presentation to engineering management.

  • Effectively interact with and communicate engineering concepts to fellow engineers, technicians, and non-engineering personnel.

  • Lead protection efforts related to various NERC compliance standards including but limited to standards PRC-002, 004, 006, 023, and 027.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university required.

  • Master’s degree from a school with an ABET accredited Bachelor’s degree in Engineering will be considered if Bachelor’s degree is not from an ABET accredited school.

  • Three (3+) or more years of related experience required.

  • Must possess valid driver’s license and be able to drive to various company locations.

  • Utility or similar experience is preferred.

  • Professional Engineer License preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Experience with protection simulation software such as CAPE and ASPEN.

  • Experience with protection-related vendor software such as SEL AcSELerator, S&C Intellilink, ENOSERV PowerBase, etc.

  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Adaptability, flexibility, and comfort with working in a fast-paced environment.

  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, with the ability to manage various priorities.

  • Prompt executor.

Additional and Physical Requirements :

  • In-office and field activities are driven by occasional role-specific tasks and critical business processes.

  • Must be able to work in various substation facility conditions (walking on uneven ground, climbing ladders, working safely nearby energized equipment, etc.) as required.

  • Provide after-hours coverage during assigned weeks for protection-related activities.
