Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Senior Scientist Research Computing for the Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC).This senior role is pivotal in maintaining and enhancing our Central REDCap installation, providing advanced scientific and technical support, and leading data-driven projects to ensure the creation of high-quality data collection tools. As a Senior REDCap Scientist, you will work closely with a multidisciplinary team of IT specialists, biostatisticians, project coordinators, and researchers, contributing to innovative research initiatives across various scientific domains. At Rutgers University, our REDCap system is the largest installation in New Jersey, supporting a wide range of research disciplines. While a significant portion of our projects are in the clinical research domain, our system also supports research in marine biology, education, social work, engineering, university administration, and library sciences. Our mission is to empower researchers with a user-friendly research database that requires no programming skills.   • Provide advanced scientific consultation to researchers, including intake, problem definition, solution design, execution, and delivery of complex REDCap projects tailored to scientific research needs.
  • Lead the design and implementation of REDCap projects involving advanced logic, calculations, data migration, and dynamic SQL fields, ensuring scientific rigor and data integrity.
  • Work closely with investigators to define scientific scope, requirements, deliverables, and timelines. Collaborate with other REDCap specialists and the project administrator for complex research projects.
  • Document technical specifications with a focus on scientific accuracy and adherence to coding standards and development/validation practices.
  • Develop and deliver custom training for end users, with an emphasis on scientific research applications, and mentor junior team members.
  • Partner with other IT service teams, such as Rutgers University Biostatistics & Epidemiology Services (RUBIES) and Clinical and Research Data Warehouse (CRDW), to support integrated scientific data solutions.
  • Provide backup for other team members and functions as needed.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, or a related scientific field required.
  • Equivalent education, experience and/or training may be substituted for the educational requirements.
  • Minimum of (6) years' experience supporting computationally intensive research projects or equivalent with hands-on experience as a REDCap support specialist or administrator.
Certifications/Licenses
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proven track record in designing and managing REDCap projects for scientific research.
  • Research experience, preferably in the clinical or scientific domain.
  • Demonstrated experience in data analysis and direct work with scientific end users.
  • Experience in developing, maintaining, and managing IT applications and systems in a scientific or healthcare setting.
  • Proficiency in running validation scripts and strong database design and debugging skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • PhD in a relevant scientific field.
  • Extensive experience with REDCap, including building scientific projects, developing data dictionaries, implementing branching logic, creating reports, and managing projects.
  • Familiarity with statistical applications (e.g., SPSS, R, SAS, or STATA) and scientific data analysis.
  • Knowledge of PHP and Java.
  • Experience with healthcare and clinical data, hospital operations, and clinical procedures.
  • Understanding of HIPAA regulations and Human Subjects regulations for scientific research.
  • Familiarity with medical ontologies (e.g., SnoMed, ICD-9/10, or CPT).
