Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is the team behind the cloud. Within CO&I, the Datacenter Engineering (DCE) team is responsible for delivering core datacenter infrastructure for Microsoft’s cloud business. The MS portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects. We are looking for a passionate, high-energy individual to help build the cloud datacenters that power the world’s largest online services.
The Senior Mechanical Engineer - Datacenter Engineering will be part of the team responsible for the development of Microsoft’s industry-leading datacenter designs in the AMERICAS region. This mechanical engineering professional will serve as a Subject Matter Expert providing key input to other organizations and internal stakeholders. Responsibilities will encompass overseeing the specification and drawing development detailing all mechanical systems, and overall network topology and communication protocols required. Leading mechanical workgroups with representatives from AE firms and other key stakeholders within Microsoft. This role requires effective communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, and a collaborative growth mindset.

This role is located either in one or all hub locations - Atlanta, GA, Washington, D.C., Redmond, WA, San Antonio, TX or Phoenix, AZ.
Relocation support will be provided, and successful candidates will need to relocate or reside within 50 miles of the hub office location.
This role is eligible for hybrid or remote work, up to (50)%.

Responsibilities
This position requires a detailed understanding of datacenter HVAC cooling systems, cooling equipment selection, plumbing systems, fire protection systems, fuel systems and mechanical Building Automation System (BAS) controls.
Direct design decisions related to datacenter projects including new construction, expansions, retrofits, and upgrades. Review construction drawings, specifications, design guides/standards, sequences of operation, and commissioning documents for technical compliance.
Engage with and manage external design consultants and run design workshops and workgroups to ensure they deliver a design from Basis of Design (BOD) to Issue for Construction (IFC) and through the Construction Administration phase of the datacenter to our Microsoft design standards.
Collaborate with Global Technical Governance team, Global Strategy team, and DCE Operations team to develop datacenter designs, first of kind pilots and prototypes, and maintain the design standard documents (drawings, specifications, equipment technical submittals, etc.) to safe, cost effective, quality builds.
Lead the delivery of mechanical system design for first-of-kind datacenter prototypes.
The position will require some travel to sites for “Factory Witness Testing”, equipment and engineering vendor interaction in the design process, as well as final commissioning of the installed systems. Travel to datacenter projects for engineering audits and reviews are also required.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience
OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
OR Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field
OR equivalent experience.
Registered professional /Licensed Engineer
3+ years of experience with HVAC, plumbing, and fire protection engineering as a consultant or owner’s representative engineer
2+ years of experience working on design of large-scale datacenter, mission critical, or facility infrastructure projects
Other Requirements:
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:
- Microsoft Cloud Background Check : This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.
Preferred Qualifications
Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years datacenter design and consulting engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years datacenter design and consulting engineering OR equivalent experience.
Ability to lead a team of engineers in advanced engineering and operational processes and procedures as they relate to hyperscale datacenter environments
Possess a high level of understanding of commercial and industrial architecture and engineering with a primary focus on datacenter design.
Experience with designing cooling systems for liquid-cooled IT hardware
Ability to perform complex business case analysis to justify technical decisions
Ability to analyze technical challenges, establish consensus amongst stakeholders, and drive decision-making
Have the ability to work with other technical and non-technical groups in a fast-paced environment and do so with an even temperament and a results-oriented collaborative manner
Effective interpersonal, written and verbal communication, and presentation skills at varying levels of the business up to and including delivering technical presentations to business executives/leadership
Knowledge of building codes and regulations
Ability to prepare and present using MS Office software packages
Ability to travel domestically and internationally
Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
