Summary This position is located at the Phoenix VA Medical Center in Nutrition, Hospitality, and Food Service (NHFS). The primary purpose of this position involves managing and coordinating the Phoenix VAMC Dietetic Internship Program in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and ACEND requirements. This position will interface with interns across the entirety of their dietetic rotations, including both clinical and foodservice. Responsibilities The Dietetic Internship Coordinator (GS-12) oversees, expands and coordinates the dietetic internship program within the Phoenix VAMC. Major duties and responsibilities include: Develops, documents, tracks and assesses program goals to ensure the program produces measurable results through evaluation of data and improved program outcomes and customer experience. Create and update the curriculum for the dietetic internship program. This includes designing educational content, ensuring alignment with accreditation standards and keeping it relevant to current practices in dietetics. Recruiting and selecting dietetic interns, including orienting them to the program and ensuring a smooth transition. Provide guidance, mentorship and supervision to the interns throughout their internship program in both the clinical and foodservice areas. This involves evaluating their performance, offering constructive feedback and helping them develop professionally. Establish and maintain relationships with preceptors and clinical sites. Writes the self-study for re-accreditation. Maintains up-to-date program information accessible through online sources. Coordinates program marketing events such as an intern open house and outreach events. Establishes an intern selection committee, selection criteria for application to the program and reviewing and evaluating all applicants prior to selection. Establishes, administers, maintains and coordinates affiliations with community programs (local food bank; Women, Infants and Children; etc.) and/or with affiliated universities for the combined master's intern program curriculum. Resolves policy, program and project issues associated with combined master's program and outside affiliations. Provides direction, orientation, coaching, in-service training and ongoing educational programs related to the dietetic internship program. Plans and coordinates intern rotations and outside seminars with preceptors, presenters and community affiliations. Basic Requirements Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. Licensure. Full, unrestricted license or certification by a state to independently practice dietetics work at the master's degree level. Education. Fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Preferred Experience: Knowledge of program coordination, clinical training/precepting, clinical education and ACEND policies. Prefer experience as a dietitian in both the clinical and foodservice realms. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements above, candidates must meet the following grade requirements. GS-12 Dietitian (Dietetic Internship Director) Experience and Education Requirement: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, you possess at least 3 years of experience as an RDN/RD and have a master's degree (or higher) from an accredited university or college which demonstrates the following Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Skill in utilizing data for program improvement to ensure compliance with various accrediting, regulatory and agency authorities. Ability to coordinate class schedules, training activities, seminars and supervised practice experience within the healthcare system and affiliated sites. Ability to implement all aspects of an internship program including developing program goals and objectives, curriculum and policies and procedures to ensure compliance with accreditation and regulatory requirements. Ability to oversee the process for the selection of students for the internship program. Ability to evaluate progress towards meeting core competencies. Assignments. This is the full performance level. Dietitian (Dietetic Internship Director) at this level are licensed or certified to independently practice as a Dietitian. Incumbents are assigned to all program areas, including but not limited to: overall planning, directing and oversight of the supervised practice for dietetic interns. Additional Information Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
