Summary:

  • Provides direct oversight of centralized Pharmacy Operations to ensure safe and efficient provision of medications to patient care areas. Provides direction to clinical pharmacists and pharmacy technicians to ensure effective completion of workflow responsibilities. Provides operational support to centralized pharmacy services as necessary to maintain patient care. Facilitates communication and education of clinical and operational initiatives to pharmacy staff. Participates in implementation and maintenance activities of clinical information technology utilized by department. Participates in the development and execution of departmental performance improvement initiatives. Ensures that controlled substances medication management and surveillance activities are completed. Ensures compliance with regulatory standards, including sterile and non-sterile compounding of hazardous and non-hazardous drugs. Provides primary responsibility for the understanding and implementation of the processes surrounding this compounding. Works with Pharmacy Management to implement new clinical and operational initiatives as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides oversight of daily centralized pharmacy operations:- Develops and maintains all employee work schedules. Ensures that work schedules meet the clinical and operational needs of pharmacy services to support patient care initiatives.- Responsible for overseeing clinical pharmacist and technician activities.- Provides clinical and operational support of all areas as necessary. Maintains proficiency to work in all areas.- Effectively communicates operational issues to both intradepartmental and interdisciplinary constituents in a timely and comprehensive manner.- Provides critical or relevant information to supervisor in a timely manner to address issues.Manages technician and student staff:- Facilitates the orientation and training of all new pharmacy employees, ensuring knowledge of policies and procedures. - Ensures staff maintain timely compliance with all required competencies, validation testing and annual employee health requirements- Responsible for completing annual performance appraisals of direct reports - Completes bi-weekly payroll for direct reportsEnsures compliance with all regulatory standards:- Ensures compliance with all The Joint Commissions medication management regulations- Ensures compliance with all applicable Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations- Ensures compliance with all applicable USP regulations - Ensures compliance with applicable state Pennsylvania Board of Pharmacy regulations. - Adheres to all policies, procedures, laws and regulations that govern the procurement, receipt, handling, and storage of controlled substances. - Completes and maintains all necessary documentation. Reports any irresolvable discrepancies to Associate Director of Pharmacy immediately.Provides primary program oversight for the sterile and non-sterile compounding of hazardous and non-hazardous drugs:- Develops and implements appropriate procedures- Oversees entity compliance with USP standards- Ensures competency of personnel- Ensures environmental control of the storage and compounding areas- Thoroughly understands the rationale for risk-prevention policies, risks to themselves and others, risks of noncompliance that may compromise safety, and the responsibility to report potentially hazardous situations to the Associate Director.- Ensures proper facility monitoring, maintains reports of testing/sampling performed in facility, and acts on the results.Remains current on state, hospital and departmental requirements- Maintains a current State of Pennsylvania licensure and for obtaining the necessary continuing education credits. Maintains a current knowledge of all advancements related to pharmacy practice through readings, hospital-sponsored programs, off-premises programs, etc. - Maintains awareness of current policies and departmental updates through timely monitoring of email, information boards, and other correspondence.- Completes work assignments efficiently and effectively. Assists co-workers during busy times and periods of staff shortages. - Demonstrates dependability through adherence to established attendance and lateness standards.Contributes to maintaining quality services provided by the department- Facilitates the orientation and training of all new pharmacy employees, ensuring knowledge of policies and procedures. - Helps ensure pharmacy staff maintain timely compliance with all required competencies, validation testing and annual employee health requirements.- Promotes staff development through participating in pharmacy staff meetings, in-services, continuing education programs, and competency measurements- Works with Pharmacy Management to implement new clinical and operational initiatives as needed.- Participates in quality control and performance improvement activities. Provides accurate and timely data as needed.- Participates in implementation and maintenance activities of clinical information technology utilized by department.- Participates in controlled substance surveillance – proactive diversion and reconciliation activities.- Proactively identifies and addresses issues impacting patient care, distributive services, or regulatory compliance.- Effectively serves as a liaison between hospital staff and pharmacy to assure consistency and quality of Pharmacy Services. Troubleshoots issues when necessary.

Credentials:

  • Pharmacist (Required)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Bachelor of Arts or Science (Required)

  • Education Specialization:Bachelor of Science Degree in Pharmacy or PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited school of pharmacy or equivalent.Equivalent Experience:•And In-depth knowledge of USP compounding regulations is essential.•Prior hospital pharmacy
