Ballard Spahr LLP is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Knowledge Management to oversee the development, implementation, and management of our knowledge management (KM) systems and initiatives. The Director of Knowledge Management will play a critical role in ensuring that our firm effectively captures, organizes, and disseminates knowledge and information to enhance the quality and efficiency of our legal services. Collaboration with the firm's Director of Technology Innovation and the Director of the Research & Intelligence Center will be key to the success of this individual. This is a remote position with the flexibility to be on-site periodically as needed if located in close proximity to Philadelphia. This position reports to the Chief Information Officer.

Key Responsibilities:

Develop and Implement Knowledge Management Strategy: Develop and execute a comprehensive knowledge management strategy aligned with the firm's goals and objectives. Identify opportunities to leverage technology and best practices to enhance knowledge sharing and collaboration within the firm.

Knowledge Capture and Organization: Design and implement processes for capturing, organizing, and indexing internal knowledge resources, including legal precedents, briefs, memos, templates, and research materials. Oversee the creation and maintenance of a centralized knowledge repository to facilitate easy access and retrieval of information by attorneys and staff.

Knowledge Sharing and Collaboration: Promote a culture of knowledge sharing and collaboration across practice areas and offices. Develop and implement training programs to educate attorneys and staff on knowledge management best practices and tools that facilitate the exchange of expertise and insights through internal knowledge-sharing forums, communities of practice, and collaborative platforms.

Technology and Tools: Evaluate, select, and implement knowledge management technologies and tools to support the firm's KM objectives. Work closely with IT and other departments to ensure the effective integration of KM systems with existing firm infrastructure and workflows.

Continuous Improvement: Monitor and assess the effectiveness of knowledge management initiatives and systems, soliciting feedback from stakeholders to identify areas for improvement. Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in knowledge management to drive continuous improvement and innovation.

Compliance and Security: Ensure that knowledge management practices and systems comply with regulatory requirements and industry standards, particularly regarding client confidentiality and data security. Implement robust security measures to safeguard sensitive information and mitigate risks associated with knowledge management activities.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Law - JD or advanced degree preferred

Minimum of 10 years of experience in knowledge management, preferably within a legal or professional services environment

Deep understanding of legal processes, terminology, and information needs

Strong project management skills with a proven track record of leading complex initiatives from conception to implementation

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate and influence stakeholders at all levels of the organization

Proficiency in knowledge management technologies and tools, such as document management systems, intranets, collaboration platforms, and search engines

Familiarity with relevant regulations and standards governing knowledge management and information security in the legal industry
