This is an exciting opportunity for a Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner to join the Inpatient Surgical Sub-Specialty Team at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP). This unique hybrid role will train on multiple subspecialty teams throughout the inpatient department of surgery but will have a primary focus on the abdominal transplant surgical population with the Penn Transplant Institute.

The Penn Transplant Institute consistently meets or exceeds the national average in all organ transplants. These superior outcomes are a result of combined efforts of multiple clinical departments across Penn Medicine and a unique, multidisciplinary approach to the treatment of end-stage organ disease. The abdominal organ transplant service at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) performs over 140 liver transplants, 220 kidney transplants, and 15 kidney/pancreas transplants per year.

Responsibilities for the NP/PA who joins our team will include inpatient management, clinical decision making, procedures according to credentialing, complex discharge planning and transitions in care, care coordination, and education of patients, family and staff. The NP/PA, will provide quality care across the continuum in collaboration with physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, nursing staff, and other members of the care team, and be expected to manage patient care autonomously within the scope of their professional practice. In addition, the provider will participate in educational activities, research as applicable, ensure regulatory compliance, document care according to standards, and prescribe in accordance with their collaborative agreement and State regulations.

This will provide the APP experience working to the full scope of their license. Opportunities for professional growth and development are available through research, lecturing, publications, and involvement with departmental and hospital projects and committees.

The candidates will be expected to work 80 hours per 2 week pay period. This includes shifts at night and rotational coverage on weekends and holidays.

All Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants function under the guidelines designed by the University of Pennsylvania Medical Center medical staff guidelines and are credentialed through that body. The PA or CRNP hired will be held accountable through a formal job description, the delineation of privileges, and their agreement with their collaborating/supervising physician who has initiated a Collaborative Practice Agreement.

Credentials:

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (Required)

  • BLS/CPR, as a healthcare provider as per the American Heart Association (For providers in the ambulatory setting) required

  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or Masters Physician Assistant required

  • Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Pennsylvania State license, active and in good standing at time of hire

  • Prescriptive Authority (Required)

  • Registered Nurse - PA (Required if Acute Care Nurse Practitioner)

Education or Equivalent Experience:

  • Master of Arts or Science (Required)

  • The CRNP must be reviewed by the Credentials Committee and approved by the Medical Board.

  • Education Specialization: Master's Degree or Doctor of Nursing Practice(DNP) in Nursing
