Job Title: Material Handler
Job Description
We are seeking a dedicated Material Handler who will start by training for at least the first few weeks. During this training period, you will shadow your trainer, perform general clean-up tasks, learn the color codes for steel, understand warehouse placement, and receive crane training based on your previous experience.
Responsibilities
Walk for 8-10 hour shifts (approximately 8 miles a day) in an inside/outside role.
Operate indoor and outdoor cranes and perform housekeeping tasks associated with the role.
Pull beams, load flatbed trailers and railcars, and handle rigging.
Receive inventory, move materials via overhead crane, fill out shipping reports, and document outgoing loads.
Work around flatbed trucks and railcar systems, adhering to all safety rules.
Train to be a saw or brake operator, and potentially advance to a forklift operator.
Learn and retain information based on color codes used in the inventory system.
Essential Skills
Warehouse inventory management
Heavy industry experience
Banding, loading, material handling, and equipment operation
Crane operation and truck loading
Logistics
1-2 years of construction or manufacturing experience
Machine operating
Forklift and bobcat operation
Overhead crane and industrial rigging
Sheet metal handling
Ability to read a tape measure
Ability to lift up to 50lbs
Experience with heavy equipment in construction or similar work
Additional Skills & Qualifications
Overhead crane experience in a heavy industry or military
Experience in construction or related fields
Ability to learn and retain color-coded information
Physical capability to jump onto and off trailers safely
Flexibility for day shift training and eventual transition to off shift

Work Environment
You will work both inside and outside, handling steel stored in a building and two separate yards. The environment can be very hot in the summer and extremely cold in the winter. The facility has a construction-like feel with hard hats, steel-toed boots, and safety vests required. The flooring is predominantly gravel, with some concrete areas, and employees walk on uneven surfaces. Shifts available include 2nd and 3rd shift roles. This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Petersburg, Virginia.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
