Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The primary responsibility of this position is to provide direct patient care and treatment; and coordinate ancillary patient care services to ensure efficient and effective care to Radiation Oncology patients. Has latitude for independent judgment, using ingenuity and initiative.

Employment Qualifications

  • Must be a graduate of an accredited program of professional nursing.

  • Must possess a current license as a Registered Nurse from the State of Virginia.

  • Work requires a comprehensive knowledge of Oncology nursing and Radiation Therapy policies, procedure standards, and systems and equipment, as normally acquired through two to three years of experience with this patient population. ONS certification preferred within 2 years of employment

  • Work requires ability to operate a variety of standard pieces of nursing equipment including but not limited to: sphygmomanometer, stethoscope, blood pressure cuff, IVAC, thermometer, suction machine, IV/medication pumps, otoscope, and ophthalmoscopes.

  • BLS required, ACLS Certification preferred

Essential Job Functions

  • Assists the physicians with medical examination and implements patient’s health care interventions. This would include, but is not limited to, changing dressings, tracheostomy care, applying or giving medications, including IV’s, performing foley catheterizations, and colostomy care.

  • Handles patients and their families with a high degree of professional ethics, care, tact, courtesy, patience and safety.

  • Performs Initial Nursing Assessments on all consult patients, which is completed in EMR

  • Reconciles Outpatient and Inpatient medication records

  • Identifies the patient’s health care needs, and selects the appropriate nursing intervention, using clinical judgment and experience. Implements individualized nursing interventions.

  • Elicits information from the patient and/or their families about symptoms and side effects, in order to assess necessary interventions. Provides clinical counseling and/or symptom management information to the patient regarding their specific complaints. Refers patient to the appropriate physician as needed.

  • Schedules and/or places orders for diagnostic tests (e.g. laboratory and x-ray) as required by the Radiation Oncologist. Follows up on tests ordered in a timely manner, reviews results and obtains physician’s approval. Enters results into EMR.

  • Maintains department and hospital records on patients in accordance with established standards.

  • Maintains an awareness of the patients’ physical and emotional condition, recognizes and reports adverse signs and takes authorized and/or necessary action.

  • Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination of contagious diseases.

  • Maintains emergency drug box/emergency equipment by checking expiration dates of medications and physical appearance for indications of tampering. Will document this daily.

  • Maintains quality control of patient care equipment, for example: oxygen, suction, pulse oximeter, etc. Reports any malfunctions to Biomed department.

  • Educates the patient and others involved in the patient’s care about the Radiation Oncology process. This includes but is not limited to skin care, special dietary concerns, daily routines of treatment, medications prescribed by the Radiation Oncologist, emotional and financial guidance, and the pain scale and assessment.

  • Prepares and reviews the chart(s) of new and returning patients to verify thoroughness of information prior to patient’s scheduled appointment.

  • Follows up on patients who missed their appointment, canceled their treatment, or are

  • hospitalized in order to determine appropriate intervention.

  • Follows up with patients by phone one week after completion of treatment and documents in patient’s medical record.

  • Administers conscious sedation per departmental policy and procedure.

  • Assists the Bon Secours Richmond Health System protocol nurse in obtaining medical studies for protocol patient evaluations.

  • Captures Evaluation and Management billing when appropriate.

  • Any other function needed for the efficiency and effectiveness of patient care within the department within legal limitations.

  • Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served on his or her assigned unit. Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development of the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age, specific needs and to provide the care needed as described in the departmental policies and procedures.

  • Prioritizes achieving positive outcomes for patient safety and patient satisfaction within all clinical and nonclinical functions and responsibilities

Other Job Functions

  • Adheres to BSHSI regulations, and polices.

  • Maintains and orders necessary medical supplies for the department.

  • Directs or supervises the activities of student radiologic technologists assigned for clinical education when applicable.

  • Schedules consult and follow-up visits in EMR as needed

  • Arranges for transportation of patients to and from Radiation Oncology when necessary.

  • Maintains cleanliness and sanitation of the work area and equipment.

  • Performs CPR as needed in emergency situations.

  • Participates in continuing education as required by professional certifications.

  • Maintains current educational material supplies, updating as needed.

  • Helps educate other staff members on current patient care issues such as medications, dietary supplements, skin care etc.

  • Attends departmental staff meetings and in services. Participates in chart rounds, reviews the patients’ charts weekly for completeness. Ensures that the nursing assessments are complete, the consents are signed and complete, educational requirements are fully documented, medicine reconciliation is completed and all other pertinent information is in place.

  • Demonstrates attitudes and/or behaviors in interacting with others that are courteous, polite, concerned, friendly and respectful, resulting in favorable patient, physician and staff perceptions of the Bon Secours Cancer Institute and its employees.
