Job Title: Performance System Project Lead

Salary: £65,537 + dependent upon experience

Location: Peterborough, UK

About IPSD

Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary

IPSD has an opening for a Performance System Project located in the United Kingdom working from our Peterborough Campus.

The Performance Systems Integration (PSI) team are responsible for end-to-end definition of the performance system: 

  • Requirements - System architecture, calibration requirements and control system definition 

  • Detailed technical trade-offs and control system development, through use of simulation and analytical tools 

  • Technical problem solving, including leading cross functional teams to technical & business solutions

  • Demonstrate product quality, emissions conformance, and product signoff 

PSI lead the engine performance development cycle; from new technology concept selection, through to development of new products and then supporting and maintaining our current products. PSI also play a key role in integrating our products into customer applications, and optimising performance. 

Additional Info

This position is currently a hybrid in-office work model, requiring 3-day weekly office presence onsite at our Peterborough office with remote work for the remaining days. However, work arrangements may be adjusted at any time based on business needs.

What You Will Do

As the Engine System Performance Project Lead, you will lead a range of highly technical projects, delivered through a team of Performance System Engineers to deliver optimised Engine System performance for NPI and current product programs, specifically on our 900 series platform.

You will direct resources of up to 5 highly engaged and talented Performance System Engineers, with responsibility for technical coaching of the team to meet its deliverables, as well as being responsible for technical leadership of the 900 series sub platform across New Product Introduction (NPI) and Current Product workstreams, including product regulatory / compliance aspects.

What You Have

Effective Communication Skills

  • Utilise strong communication, leadership, and project management skills, to influence technical business decisions.

  • Ability to communicate technical and project information clearly within a cross functional Engineering team, and key stakeholders at all levels.

  • Deliver presentations and write reports needed to communicate and document project deliverables & outcomes.

  • An ability to coach junior Engineers and team members on both technical and soft skills.

Problem Solving Skills

  • Structured approach to technical problem solving, using appropriate tools & methodologies, and an ability to coach others.

  • Strong data analysis skills applied to engine / powertrain performance and / or control systems .

  • Independently lead technical projects (personal technical contribution + 3-4 people) with defined high-level scope & an ability to build detailed view of deliverables.

Technical Excellence

  • Experience of some or all of the following:

  • IC Engine (SI/CI) / Aftertreatment (DOC / DPF / SCR) performance development

  • Application of 0D/1D performance simulation tools (e.g. GT Power, Ricardo Wave) to design and optimise performance systems

  • Knowledge of Engine / Powertrain control systems, their development and optimisation through simulation and data analysis (inc. Matlab / Simulink experience)

  • Convert top level customer, business and regulatory requirements into optimised technical system performance and emissions requirements.

  • Drive system level tradeoffs between engine and aftertreatment through use of data analysis, simulation tools and deep technical knowledge.
