Universal Engineering Sciences Ecological Support Technician in Pensacola, Florida

Overview:

Universal Engineering Sciences (UES) has an opening in our Environmental Department. UES is a nationwide leader in Geotechnical Engineering, Construction Materials Testing and Inspection, Building Code Compliance, Environmental, Occupational Health & Safety, and Building Envelope.

Summary

The Ecological Support Technician role is responsible in the planning, implementation and monitoring of ecological and environmental projects. This role involves fieldwork, data collection, analysis and reporting to support environmental assessments, restoration projects and ecological studies. The ideal candidate will have a passion for environmental conservation, strong technical skills and the ability to work collaboratively in various outdoor conditions.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Required to drive, stand, walk, use hands to type, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance, talk, and hear; body motions and movements include bending, twisting, reaching, stooping, pulling, kneeling, lifting, carrying, and pushing, with or without reasonable accommodation

• The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to seventy-five pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to seventy-five pounds, with or without reasonable accommodation

• Job site conditions may or may not be accessible by vehicle, including wetlands, swamps, grasslands, and fields with uneven surfaces, sand, brush, and other natural and man-made obstacles

• The work is performed outside on the field with exposure to dirt, dust, sun, heat, and humidity

• This job is primarily and regularly exposed to outside weather conditions and construction sites where the noise level is usually moderate to loud

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in collecting and recording of ecological data, including soil samples, water quality tests, vegetation surveys, wildlife monitoring, GPS coordinates, species observations and habitat characteristics.

  • Participate in habitat restoration projects, including planting native species, removing invasive species, and monitoring project outcomes.

  • Manage and analyze ecological data using software tools, and prepare detailed reports and summaries of field activities, findings, and project progress for stakeholders.

  • Perform wetland delineation and conduct applied ecological investigations to support project objectives.

  • Ensure proper maintenance and calibration of field equipment, including GPS devices, water quality meters, and data loggers.

  • Adhere to safety protocols, participate in safety training, and ensure all field activities comply with environmental regulations and project guidelines.

  • Support outreach efforts, including community education events, workshops, and public presentations on ecological topics.

  • Collaborate closely with ecologists, biologists, environmental scientists, and other team members.

  • Complete and submit daily time and labor reports and required paperwork in accordance with company policies.

  • Be flexible with changing schedules and hours to meet business needs, and be willing to travel within Florida as required.

  • Maintain regular attendance and follow all company safety procedures and policies.

  • Perform other tasks related to ecological research and support as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record (in accordance with our Driver’s License and Motor Vehicle Record Check Criteria)

  • Ability to pass a background check screening in accordance with Florida’s Jessica Lunsford Act (or equivalent state classification)

  • Bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, or related field

  • Functional knowledge of local flora and fauna

  • Ability to read & write, including interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, as well as the ability to write routine reports and correspondence and speak effectively with colleagues, supervisors, and customers/clients

  • Computer skills sufficient to operate a laptop, including sending and receiving emails, and proficiency with ARC GIS, and Tremble GPS

  • Mathematical skills sufficient to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals

  • Reasoning ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram form

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience in fieldwork, ecological research, or environmental projects is preferred
