THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As part of this role, your main responsibility will be overseeing the execution of inspection, investigation, and enforcement tasks within the Solid Waste Management Program. This involves directing the daily activities of Environmental Trainees and Solid Waste Specialists to ensure that the program's objectives are achieved.

You will also be responsible for assigning specific geographic work areas to employees, ensuring that workload is distributed efficiently. This includes planning, organizing, and assigning various work tasks to staff members, taking into consideration their skills and expertise.

Another important aspect of your role will be evaluating the performance of your team members. You will be responsible for assessing their work performance, preparing employee Annual Performance Evaluation Reports, and signing off on them.

Additionally, you will be the point of contact for receiving complaints related to the Solid Waste Management Program. You will conduct initial investigations into the causes and conditions of these complaints, discussing them with the relevant employee, and working towards resolving the issues or recommending suitable solutions.

Lastly, you will have the opportunity to interview prospective employees and provide recommendations for employee selection. This will involve assessing candidates' qualifications, skills, and suitability for the position within the program.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience as a journey-level specialist in a waste management program in the Department of Environmental Protection;or

  • Three years of experience in environmental protection and a Bachelor's Degree with major course work in biology, chemistry, or in a field closely related to environmental protection. A Master's Degree with major course work in any of the fields closely related to environmental protection may be substituted for one year of the required experience; or

  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that affords the applicant the required knowledges and abilities.

    Special Requirement:

  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's Class C Driver's License as issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
