THE POSITION

The Department of Transportation, District 3, a key player in maintaining Pennsylvania's highways, is looking to hire an Engineering Technician. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will perform a range of entry-level technical duties within the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), concentrating on design, construction, and maintenance efforts. You will provide engineering assistance to various PennDOT units while acquiring essential knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, organizational structures, and workflows.

To achieve the training goals, you will engage in a structured program featuring rotational assignments across engineering districts, allowing you to become acquainted with district staff and processes while participating in work projects. Additionally, classroom instruction will be delivered according to the program coordinator's guidelines, with all activities being closely evaluated for thoroughness, technical accuracy, and methodological soundness. In this role, you will carry out technical tasks related to drafting, which involve creating highway plans based on field survey data, designing minor highway projects from the initial engineering stage to the final plan, and completing minor design assignments under the guidance of a civil engineer, highway designer, or highway drafter designer. The work will employ Computer Aided Drafting and Design (CADD) software to ensure efficiency and precision in task completion.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment

  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.

  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, after successfully completing probationary period and training program. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Montoursville.

  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • An associate degree in surveying, drafting, designing, civil, or any other appropriate field of engineering technology.

  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 6 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.
