Senior Medical Writer, Scientific Communications
Job Summary
Senior Medical Writers work as part of a multidisciplinary team (including medical director, editor, graphic designers, and account personnel) to produce slide presentations, meeting summaries, web-based and social media materials, video scripts, podcasts and Medical Affairs documents. Level of experience and ability to effectively partner with medical directors to create efficiencies justifies the senior role.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Providing research and writing support to assigned brand teams and new business efforts
Working independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes a medical director, editor, graphic designers, and account personnel
Attending meetings as required, including internal kick-off meetings, status meetings, and client/author calls
Producing slide presentations, executive meeting summaries, web-based and social media materials, content for digital assets, video scripts, podcasts, and other promotional medical communication materials suitable for HCPs
Writing scientifically accurate, fully referenced materials, appropriate to the target audience
Ensuring that written materials meet the authors’ communication objectives, client specifications, and industry guidelines
Interacting with key experts to solicit their input, facilitate alignment, resolve queries, and make content suggestions
Researching medical topics using relevant information sources; annotating those sources while writing
Developing and maintaining in-depth knowledge in relevant therapy areas including disease state, treatment guidelines, drug mechanisms of action, product efficacy and safety profile, and competitive landscape
Working independently to incorporate revisions and address reviewer questions/comments
Understanding expectations regarding budgeted hours and deadlines, and communicating with team about these as needed
Contributing strategic recommendations and suggestions for continuous quality improvement
Providing mentoring/training to newly hired writers
Experience, Skills, and Qualifications
A strong scientific understanding (MD, PharmD, or PhD preferred) and excellent writing skills
Multiple years of agency experience drafting medical communications, medical education, pharmaceutical marketing, medical affairs, content production (promotional slide presentations and ad board decks) or equivalent
Ability to interpret and write from clinical trial protocols, statistical analysis plans, and clinical study reports
Proficiency in communicating complex scientific ideas and statistical analyses in a simple, concise, and accurate manner
Flair for managing multiple competing priorities with an ability to delegate, prioritize, problem solve, and set expectations
Confidence and professional demeanor when interacting with clients and key experts
Enthusiasm, team-player attitude, and self-motivation
Openness to accept constructive feedback from the scientific director, KOL/subject-matter experts, and clients and implement it across your projects
Ability to understand any pharmaceutical product quickly and thoroughly, particularly as it relates to the overall therapeutic area – experience working in Type 2 Diabetes is a PLUS!
Awareness and being cognizant of team/company expectations in terms of budgeted hours, deadlines, and other goals and communicating with team regarding these as needed
Ability to learn and follow standard operating procedures (SOPs), including updating of project files, following sign-off procedures, and version-control conventions
Familiarity with FDA, AMA, and PhRMA Guidelines as they pertain to the core business and product legalities
Ability to foster integration, collaboration, and teamwork with account team members
Ability to interact with third parties (other agency vendors/professional organizations/societies) where appropriate
Complete and comprehensive knowledge of the professional education (on label) process
Proficiency with PubMed searches and MS365 programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), including figure and table development
Strong written/verbal communication skills
Travel Requirements
The ability to travel and meet with clients as required to maintain effective relationships
10% potential domestic travel
