Arrow Child & Family Ministries Teacher - Social Studies in Parkville, Maryland

As aTeacherin a self-contained classroom for our Type III school, you will have a chance to provide quality educational services to young people, ages 11-18, who have been placed in our 90 day residential program. For many of these young people, the school day will represent the greatest sense of normalcy as they face challenges in their personal lives. With the help of assistant teachers and/ or residential counselors, you'll make a positive and effective impact with the curriculum you've developed to "fit" your individual students. You'll also participate as an active member of the Treatment Team to develop an overall strategy to help each child succeed in reaching their full potential. This position requires proficiency and knowledge of the State Common Core Standards in the area of high school and middle school instruction.

Arrow Teacher Essential Duties:

  • Maintains a safe learning environment for students within the scope of the Arrow Center for Education administrative policies and procedures. Supervises and manages student behavior in the classroom, school and school-sponsored functions.
  • Provides direct group and individual instruction to students in English/language arts, math, science, social studies and a range of electives and/or other required courses.
  • Prepares and utilizes comprehensive unit plans to instruct groups of approximately nine (9) students. Utilizes academic performance, learning style and clinical information on each student to design and implement curriculum, instructional strategies and materials to address the educational and behavioral needs of each student.
  • Provides a learning environment that is stimulating and motivating to students who generally have not adjusted well to school.
  • Assures the timely completion of all necessary paperwork to accurately record student progress. This is to include daily attendance records, grades and behavioral logs.
  • Prepares periodic and special evaluations through the IEP or PEP (as applicable) for assigned students. Reports significant changes in educational and social behavior and makes recommendations for plan changes.
  • Participates as an active member of the Treatment Team. Communicates all appropriate information within and without the classroom orally and in writing.
  • Assists in the development and maintenance of a positive school culture.
  • Maintains proper rules, safety and security of students, providing crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Shares/transmits the mission and vision of Arrow Child and Family Ministries to staff and to students and families served.
  • Perform all duties within contract, state and federal regulations, Arrow policy, COA, and NCASES standards.

A Teacher Requires:

Bachelor's Degree and a valid (issued) State Department of Education Teaching Certificate in the area of Special Education or eligible and willing to obtain the certificate. At least one (1) year of teaching experience in special education preferred.
