Description

Responsibilities of a financial representative include:

  • Communicate with patients and insurance companies on the phone or in person

  • Establishing health insurance benefits, conditions and requirements by making phone inquiries, and by using eligibility systems and the internet.

  • Records and maintains complete documentation of activities performed on account while the patient is in-house.

  • Educate patients about payment options and financial assistance

  • Negotiate and strategize patient payment arrangements

  • Update patient accounts and balances

  • Review and process patient and insurance company forms

  • Completing financial applications.

  • Assisting patients with financial applications and arrangements.

  • Verifying patients’ employment details and other particulars.

  • Reporting problems and concerns to supervisor.

  • Complying with relevant rules, regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Work closely with Case Management on a daily basis in regards to patient status changes.

  • Assist in registering patients or admitting patients when needed.

  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of the hospital.

  • Greet all patients, families, and visitors with a positive attitude.

  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Financial Counselor Requirements:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or suitable equivalent.

  • 2+ years work experience in customer service or related field.

  • Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, billing practices and coding.

  • Proficient computer skills.

  • Proficient with MS Office Suites.

  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.

  • Proficient mathematical skills.

  • Outstanding people skills.

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Bi-lingual a plus in speaking Spanish and conversing in Spanish

  • Medicaid PE Certification is required, can but obtained during probationary period.

Qualifications

Education

Preferred

  • Diploma or better in Diploma/GED

Experience

Required

  • Typing: minimum 25 wpm.

  • 2 years: 2 years experience in customer service or related field

Preferred

  • Billing or insurance experience in a physician’s office, hospital, or insurance office required, or suitable combination of education and experience.

  • Working knowledge of medical terminology and insurance.
