Amazon Software Development Manager, Search Builder Technologies in Palo Alto, California

The mission of Search Builder Technologies (SBT) is to enable Amazon builders to successfully experiment and launch new features on the search page while maintaining Amazon customer trust. We do this through developing tools and processes for increasing builder success and speed, improving the reliability and speed of search, and providing accurate customer behavior data for experiment results. We work to ensure experimentation is conducted safely and maintains a high customer bar. Anything that reaches customers is relevant, highly available, fast, and defect free. Our efforts increase trust, transparency, speed, and autonomy for and among builders working in Search.

On a day-to-day basis, you'll be part of a small, close-knit team of engineers that are agile, data driven, and highly collaborative. You’ll help analyze customer behavior, propose ideas and solutions during sprint planning with your team, implement big ideas, and then measure the results. Engineers on our team have proposed ideas that have impacted millions of customers and generated millions of dollars in revenue.

Our team is responsible for assembling the content shown to customers on Amazon search pages. We define the composition of the page and orchestrate the content that should be displayed through a highly available service. We provide a platform to enable teams to propose search content that best fulfills customer needs.

You should be a well-rounded software engineer, with expertise in building large-scale web applications and/or low-latency services, optimized for performance. You should love challenges, working on large-scale customer facing projects, creating things, and take great personal pride in building beautiful and functional user interfaces.

Basic Qualifications

  • 3+ years of engineering team management experience

  • 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience

  • 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience

  • 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience

  • Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations

  • Experience partnering with product or program management teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy

  • Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
