Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research Life Science Research Assistant - Kidney Disease and Dialysis in Palo Alto, California

Palo Alto Veterans Institute for Research (PAVIR) supports the nation's second largest research program conducted among the VA Hospitals and is looking for a full-timeLife Science Research Assistant.The Research Assistant will support the conduct of studies pertaining to kidney disease and dialysis. The Research Assistant will assist with skilled procedures and protocols to completion, while also initiating modifications of assay protocols and development of new protocols.

Studies are run by VA and Stanford kidney physicians.

Schedule:The Research Assistant should be able to work flexible hours if needed to accommodate dialysis schedules (i.e. potential to work some weekend days and some early mornings to visit patients and collect samples when the study coordinators and/or investigator are unavailable). Work from home is available for days not required in the lab.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist with and perform assays of biological and chemical samples using analytical methods including liquid chromatography, mass spectrometry, and UV photospectrometry under supervision;
  • Carry through skilled procedures and protocols to completion, thinking independently and creatively;
  • Initiate and contribute to modification of assay protocols and development of new protocols;
  • Train and orient new lab members (students, postdoctoral fellows);
  • Guide lab members and facilitate their progress when the investigator cannot be in the lab.
  • Ensure proper maintenance of records of samples obtained from human subjects and from outside collaborators. Generate and maintain summary of chemical assay results.
  • Contribute to patient recruitment and follow-up;
  • Take ownership and prepare reports for defined portions or roles in writing scientific papers from the data acquired;
  • Contribute in meaningful ways in lab meetings.
  • Other tasks as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Required:Bachelor's degree (expected graduation December 2023) or equivalent experience;
  • Valid Driver License; occasional travel to Stanford;
  • 0-1 year of internship experience working with assays and lab-related experience;
  • Preferred:Experience with mass spectrometric assay of compounds in human plasma and urine including derivatization;
  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate dialysis schedules (i.e. potential to work some weekend days and some early mornings to visit patients and collect samples when the study coordinators and/or investigator are unavailable)
  • Knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the research field gained through education or experience;
  • Ability to understand and follow VA regulations and procedures regarding research;
  • Knowledge of safe handling / storage of biohazardous chemicals and bloodborne pathogens;
  • Ability to work independently;
  • Excellent organization skills and attention to detail;
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with strong interpersonal skills;
  • Solid record-keeping skills to maintain a research notebook with day-to-day experiment procedures and results;
  • Proven technical and analytical skills;
  • Ability to troubleshoot an experiment as necessary;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
