Senior Manager, Government and Public Affairs

Purpose of Job

Telesat, a leading global provider of satellite solutions is developing Telesat Lightspeed, the world’s most advanced Low Earth Orbit satellite network that will connect everyone, everywhere to high-speed Internet and 5G connectivity.

Reporting into the Head of Public Policy, Strategic Accounts and Business Development, you will play a critical leadership role in developing and executing Telesat’s government and public affairs strategies.

This is a highly dynamic role perfectly suited for someone who is ambitious, results oriented, looking to grow their skills and do something meaningful everyday.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute comprehensive public affairs and government relations strategies (federal, provincial, international) to shape policy and secure revenue backlog.

  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with government officials, regulators, agencies and industry associations at all levels of government to influence decisions and advocate for Telesat's objectives.

  • Foster further collaboration with Canada's defence community with the goal of securing meaningful partnerships with the Department of National Defence as well as NORAD and NATO.

  • Create impactful presentations for internal and external audiences, effectively communicating Telesat's initiatives and value proposition.

  • Distill complex and technical subjects into concise and understandable messages for diverse audiences, including governments and policymakers.

  • Conduct research and analysis on government policies, programs, legislation, and regulations, providing strategic guidance to senior management on their impact to Telesat.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • University degree in a relevant discipline, such as commerce/business administration, political science, economics, or engineering.

  • 7-10 years of progressive experience demonstrating increased levels of responsibility.

Specialized Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Possess a high level of professionalism with exceptional interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, both written and oral.

  • Demonstrates a proven ability to establish and cultivate strong relationships.

  • Highly skilled in creating impactful presentations using PowerPoint to deliver a compelling message.

  • Displays a strong overall business acumen, along with proficiency in relationship building, influencing, and negotiation.

Great to have but not required

  • Experience working in a public affairs or management consulting firm or experience working in government.

  • Familiarity with the space, telecommunications and/or defence sectors.

  • Bilingual with strong oral and writing skills in both of Canada’s official languages.

Decision Making

  • Ability to act with a high level of autonomy and accountability and creatively navigate ambiguity.

  • Strong ability to work effectively with cross-functional team members in an international environment and interface with the company’s Executive Management team.

  • Comfortable engaging with and presenting to executive and CEO audiences.

  • Be a self-starter, able to act independently with full awareness of the company’s strategic objectives, and be able to make business decisions that will ensure strong positioning to win business opportunities.
