Team & Job Overview
EDC Credit Insurance (CI) team is seeking to recruit a Principal Underwriter to become an integral part of our diverse team of dynamic and motivated professionals responsible for providing Credit Insurance to Canadian Financial Institutions (FI’s) and Re-Insurance to our Private Insurance Partners.
The CI Principal Underwriter will be relied upon to manage a complex portfolio of FI's and Partners to understand their needs, structure bespoke insurance coverage and assess counterparty creditworthiness to achieve the optimal balance between customer-centricity and EDC’s business requirements.
They will also lead and contribute to strategic initiatives focused on program growth in international markets in key sectors aligned to the 2030 strategy. They play a key role in mentoring and developing underwriters and senior underwriters on the team and helping support a positive and collaborative team environment. The role is customer facing and involves managing transaction through their full lifecycle, including early-stage triage, risk rating, structuring, issuance, and risk management.
Discipline Summary
Delivers credit insurance solutions, including non-standard transactions, to facilitate international trade.
Assesses the risk of the proposed solutions in meeting customer needs, establishes appropriate transaction terms and conditions, and provides on-going customer service throughout the product lifecycle.
Assesses the credit worthiness and risk level of buyers (financial/ environmental / social technical) and performs credit risk analysis to understand the company's current and future capabilities with regards to all types of obligations (ex: debt repayment, profitability and cash flow management), and uses business/economic/political analytical thinking to identify other types of risks associated with the transaction.
Participates along with internal partners in developing loss mitigation strategies for problem buyers.
Participates in continuous process improvement initiatives to streamline operations.
Demonstrates strong customer relationship management through engagements with customers and internal and external partners.
Presents complex transactions and risk assessments to internal approval individuals and committees to arrive at a decision that satisfies all parties.
Responsibilities
Leads or advises on the end-to-end structuring, negotiation and execution of the most complex transactions in the portfolio, across a range of sectors and presents recommendations to internal approval committees to arrive at decisions that align with the program’s risk appetite and satisfy all parties.
Manages a portfolio of complex customers who have a direct impact on the performance of the portfolio and achievement of strategic goals.
Solves complex problems and uses sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgement and identify innovative solutions.
Leads strategic initiatives that support the performance, growth and integrity of the program in alignment with EDC’s medium and long term goals
Contributes transactional, industry and professional expertise to management level strategic discussions on program risk appetite, portfolio growth opportunities and portfolio risk mitigation
Provides mentorship, deal oversight and guidance to team members in order to foster their personal development and support/improve their contributions to the team.
Screening Criteria
Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Commerce or other relevant discipline
Minimum 10 years of experience in financial analysis or underwriting/lending or related financial services experience.
Significant experience reading and interpreting financial statements with strong financial analysis skills.
Significant experience leading and supporting the successful completion of increasingly complex commercial credit transactions across a variety of industry sectors and international markets.
Demonstrated ability to drive operational effectiveness.
Ability to work with cross-functional teams to drive strategy execution.
Assets:
- Bilingual in both official languages (French and English)
Salary Range:
- Underwriter 19: Salaries typically range from $107,132 to $142,842 annually, based on qualifications and experience, plus a performance-based incentive
Location
Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.
This role may be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa, or from one of the Community Hubs located in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, Halifax or Vancouver.
