Consultant, please conduct seated interview. Period of intended Employment: 3/1/2024-10/14/2024. Location: Ocean Park, Washington. Applicant \"MUST HAVE\" 3 months of shellfish experience.

This is a job description for shellfish: Oysters and clams.

Bottom/Longline Culture Oyster Picker:\ These oysters are intended for the shucked market and large (4\"+) live oyster market. Both start out by setting the seed on oyster beds in setting tanks. Bottom culture grows on the ground, and long line culture the \"mother\" shell with seed is threaded into three strand poly rope. Once planted grow out time will be 3-5 years. Each daily harvest will range from 500-1000 bushels. Crews are responsible for loading/unloading the setting tanks, stacking bags of seed once they\'re out on the bed, breaking open the bags of seed into 25-bushel tubs or for longlines threading the rope into PVC pipes in the ground, blowing the seed off of the deck of a vessel with a water hose, hand picking the oysters when they are ready to be moved or harvested and unloading the harvest off of the boat.

Work will be scheduled around the tides in Willapa Bay. Picking can take place during any type of weather and any time of the day or night. Some shellfish beds are reached by walking across the mudflats while others are reached by a crew boat. Picking oysters is physical, constant repetitive motion, manual labor which involves hand picking live oysters off the tide flats into baskets and dumping them into a container. The average bushel of oysters weighs 40 to 60 pounds, the average oyster picker can pick anywhere from 100 to 200 bushels/day in a tide depending on individual effort and tide duration. A tide can last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours. Although the main function of an oyster picker is to pick oysters, this job may require any and all labor associated with farming activities such as but not limited to planting, digging clams, maintenance, clean up, bed preparation, washing, packing, record keeping, grounds maintenance, bagging shell, loading and emptying tanks with bags of shell, or bottom and longline culture oysters.

Many of these tasks require lifting and moving 30 to 65 pounds in a constant repetitive motion as is the case with many agricultural activities. It is your responsibility to stay in contact with the oyster crew boss to know your work schedule and location. Although the main function is to assist harvesting oysters, this job may require workers to assist with farm vessel operations. Work will be scheduled around the tides in Willapa Bay. Equipment operation can take place during any type of weather and during any time of the day or night. Those on deck must demonstrate an ability to work safely in a marine environment while loading and unloading boats. Workers will be expected to perform manual labor including transferring oysters, moving tubs, offloading substrate, etc. Workers will be expected to perform maintenance and repairs, monitor for safety issues, clean all areas of vessel, and any other duty normal to deckhand work. It is your responsibility to stay in contact with your supervisor to know your work schedule and locations.

CLAM DIGGER: Work will be scheduled around the tides in Willapa Bay. Digging can take place during any time of the day or night and in any kind of weather. Some beds are reached by walking across the tide flats while others are reached by a crew boat. Digging clams is physical, constant repetitive motion, manual labor which involves being in a standing or kneeling position and digging clams out of the tide flats of Willapa Bay and\ placing them into buckets and mesh bags. The average bag of clams weighs 30 to 40 lbs., and the average digger can dig anywhere from 50 to 200 pounds/day in a tide depending on individual effort and tide duration. A tide can last anywhere from 1 to 5 hours. Although the main function of a clam digger is to dig clams, this job may require any and all labor associated with farming activities such as but by all means not limited to: retrieving bags of clams from the bay, planting, picking clams, maintenance, clean up, bed preparation, washing, packing, record keeping, grounds maintenance, bagging shell, loading and unloading tanks with bags of shell, etc.
