Description of Department:

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is a vibrant department that supports degrees in Physics, Applied Physics and Physics Education, and an Astronomy Minor. The department has well equipped teaching facilities, including state of the art upper division laboratory teaching equipment in Astronomy and Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Optics, Nanophysics, Nuclear Physics and Condensed Matter Physics.

The department maintains strong research programs in Astrophysics, Atomic Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nanophysics and Nuclear Physics. Our faculty regularly mentor students undertaking on/off campus research/internship experiences as well as at leading research institutions overseas. The Department has a complete array of equipment for the growth, property investigation and device fabrication based on nanomaterials, thin film fabrication facilities, ultrahigh vacuum chamber, electric transport measurement devices, an electronics lab, a semi-automated astronomical observatory including a 16" Meade, a LHIres spectrograph, two SBIG CCDs and several smaller telescopes. The Department operates a state-of-the-art Spitz Digital Planetarium that can seat thirty five audiences. The Department regularly provides planetarium shows to local schools and the surrounding community, and have developed several innovative shows using the latest data/images from several sources.

The Department of Physics and Astronomy at the State University of New York at Oswego invites applications to fill a full time Physics Lab Technician position.

Description of Responsibilities: Hands-on laboratory courses for majors and non-majors are a significant component of the department's course offerings. The Lab Technician will be responsible for setting up the laboratory experiments for the introductory-level courses and assisting other instructors with setting up some intermediate-level labs.

The day to day responsibilities of the Lab Technician will include, but are not limited to,

a. Setting up introductory-level laboratories.

b. Setting up the equipment for weekly laboratories and checking it to ensure it is in working order.

c. Restocking the equipment used in the labs.

d. Being generally available during introductory lab sessions to correct routine problems with equipment.

e. Assisting Campus Technology Services with the operation and maintenance of computers used in the labs.

f. Assisting the department's Lab Coordinator in keeping the department at the forefront of new pedagogical trends.

g. Developing new demonstration apparatus when requested.

h. On a limited basis, teaching introductory labs.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Physics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • MS in Physics or related field.

  • Hands-on technology skills.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Passion for science and science education.

  • Team-working skills and consistency.

The Department anticipates developing an Applied Electronics Microcredentials program. As such the Lab Technician's should have some familiarity with electronics construction, digital electronics, industrial electronics, and computer interfacing technology.
