Orlando Utilities Commission Instrumentation & Control Technician II (Power Plant) in Orlando, Florida

In this role, you will be responsible for the troubleshooting and maintenance of Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems throughout the power plant as well as programing control logic and graphics. The I&C Technician II will skillfully offer alternative solutions when identifying problems and making recommendations for corrective action.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Minimum of four (4) years of power plant Instrumentation & Control Maintenance experience, OR seven (7) years of industrial Instrumentation & Control Maintenance experience

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Completion of required General Physics (GPI) learnings and JPMs through I&C Technician III progression level (or equivalent skills training if external candidate)

  • Certifications and specialized trainings to be required upon hire and to be maintained thereafter

Salary Range: Starting at $36.499 per hour (Estimated $75,917.00 annually) with a structured step progression system and performance-based pay increases every 6 months up to $ 42.186 per hour (Estimated $87,746.00 annually)

Job Purpose:

Responsible for the troubleshooting and maintenance of instrumentation and control (I&C) systems throughout the power plant as well as programing control logic and graphics. The tech II classification is expected to hone and develop the mastery of I&C work functions, focusing on a specific area of the Power Plant while becoming more familiar over time with other areas. I&C Technicians are focused primarily on the technology and equipment allowing for the measurement of various elements (heat, pressure, voltage, water level, etc.), controls for various systems, calibration, and feedback displays providing information to the correct places and people (i.e. control rooms/operators).

Primary Functions:

  • Troubleshoot power plant I&C systems, including problem identification, evaluation of alternative solutions, and implementation of corrective action;

  • Perform maintenance on the equipment and technology allowing for the control, various measurements (heat, pressure, vibration etc.), calibration, and feedback displays for power plant equipment and systems to include: steam turbines, valves, bearings, turbines, high and low horsepower fans, pumps, gear pumps, vertical dry pit pumps, air compressors, hydraulic systems, centrifugal pumps, conveyor systems (pneumatic and belt), and crushers; Advanced tasks on aforementioned equipment may be done under supervision of a Tech I until demonstrated full proficiency;

  • Assist with the programing of the control logic and design the graphical displays for feedback systems using Emerson Ovation DCIS to ensure accurate readings and information reach the appropriate places and people (i.e. control rooms/ power plant operators);

  • Plan and perform the installation of new control systems, and perform upgrades on existing systems;

  • Utilize P&IDs and other documentation displaying the configuration and specification of parts, equipment, and systems to perform I&C work;

  • Mentor and guide lower classification technicians within the I&C technician’s duties to help with their learning and development in progression;

  • Demonstrate proficiency of Electric Technician skills at the Tech III level (Competent in less complex tasks, developing in moderate/advanced tasks);

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

  • Technical Requirements: Working knowledge of all, but not limited to the following:

  • OSHA Safety practices and procedures (i.e. LOTO practices, PPE, vehicle safety policies, fire safety procedures, fall-arrest and confined spaces protocols, etc.);

  • Installing, upgrading, and maintaining I&C systems for heavy equipment (power plant, industrial, etc.);

  • Power plant systems, their redundancies, and outage schedules (preferred);

  • Interpretation and editing of relevant documents outlining the layout, configuration, and specifications of various equipment (i.e. blueprints, P&IDs, etc.)

  • Use of equipment to include: Hand tools, feedback measurement tools (i.e. HART device, volt meter, etc), measurement tools (i.e. micrometers), etc.;

  • Basics of electrical theory; Familiarity with all, but not limited to the following:

  • Software and technologies to include: Distributed Control Systems (e.g. Ovation, Foxboro), Eclipse [for LOTO procedures], JD Edwards Enterprise One (E1) [for TRs and PM work orders], databases (Access or similar), Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) i.e. Modicon, Allen Bradley (preferred);

  • Power Plant operations (preferred);

  • Related industry, organizational and departmental regulatory guidelines, best practices, and procedures;

  • Strong problem solving, time management, and communication skills; Ability to:

  • Learn and comply with OUC Safety practices and procedures (i.e. LOTO [Lock Out Tag Out] practices, PPE, vehicle safety policies, fire safety procedures, fall-arrest and confined spaces protocols, etc.);

  • Make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions and decimals, and compute rates, ratios, and percentages;

  • Use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc.) and standard office equipment (telephone, computer, copier, etc.) with basic proficiency. Education/ Certification/ Years of Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or GED

  • Minimum of four (4) years of power plant I&C maintenance experience, OR seven (7) years of industrial I&C maintenance experience

  • Certifications and specialized trainings to be required upon hire and to be maintained thereafter:

  • Completion of required General Physics (GPI) learnings and JPMs through I&C Technician III progression level (or equivalent skills training if external candidate)

  • Florida Driver’s License Working Conditions: This job requires willingness to work extended hours when required including nights, weekends, and holidays. This job requires working in areas with elevations in excess of 100 feet, confined spaces, excessive noise, chemicals, noxious fumes, vibration, extreme heat (non-weather), insects, and occasionally extreme weather conditions. This job involves risk of electrical shock. Physical Requirements :This job includes constant or very frequent standing, walking, sitting, climbing, speaking & hearing (English), typing, and detailed inspection/reading/editing. This job involves frequent lifting up to 40 lbs, and occasional lifting 50+ lbs, bending/stooping, pushing, pulling, and/or digging, reaching over head, and kneeling/crawling. This job requires regular use of company vehicles.
