Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

Provides direct patient care under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or designated healthcare provider in accordance with federal, state and local regulations within the policies, procedures, guidelines of Mercy Health. Collects specimens from patients as ordered. Sends or transports specimens and computer orders to the main laboratory. Assumes responsibility for the safety and comfort of patients, following established standards and practices. Understands and reacts effectively to the unique needs of the neonatal, pediatric, adolescent and/or geriatric patient. Assists with clerical duties of the department. Respects and maintains confidentiality.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provide basic patient care to include, but not limited to, care and comfort, EKGs, record vital signs, personal care and hygiene, mobility and wound care, transporting patients, and including unit based specialty duties. Provides accurate, precise, timely documentation when applicable for patient care. Takes inventory and stocks supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.

  • Perform phlebotomy /laboratory duties in area of assignment, assisting all areas as needed. Sends or transports specimens to main laboratory. Ensures that STAT tests reach the clinical lab as quickly as possible. Performs clinical laboratory secretarial duties as assigned. Draws blood in proper tube. Labels and records all test tubes per protocol/policy and uses two patient identifiers. Reviews patient requisitions for completeness, following up on any required items.

  • Greet, meet, and explain procedure to patient and maintain professional relationship. Provides high level customer service to all patients, patient's family, visitors and all employees. Follow up on any issues, problems. Acts as a liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns to nurse.

  • Uses professional, verbal and written communication skills at all times. Answer call lights and telephone promptly, follow up and refer as necessary.

  • Maintains working area in sanitary condition. Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment and supplies. Maintains hand hygiene per hospital policy.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications

Required Minimum Education:

High School Diploma or GED

Licensure/Certification Required:

Current Ohio STNA Certification at time of hire.

Minimum Years and Type of Experience:

Two years of recent experience in acute or long term care facility or nursing student with 1 semester of clinical rotation completed.

Combination of post-secondary education and experience in lieu of a degree.
