Omaha Public Power District Operations Shift Supverisor - North Omaha Station in Omaha, Nebraska

Summary:

Are you a seasoned leader with a passion for operational excellence and a commitment to safety? Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) is seeking a dedicated and skilled Shift Supervisor to oversee the operations of our Nebraska City/North Omaha stations. In this critical role, you will be the single point of contact responsible for making key operational decisions to ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally sound functioning of our facilities.

As a Shift Supervisor, you will lead a team of competent shift operations staff, set performance standards, and ensure compliance with all procedures and policies. You will also serve as the acting Manager of Station Operations during off hours, providing leadership and direction during nights, weekends, and holidays. This role is vital in supporting continuous improvement initiatives and maintaining the highest standards of safety and performance.

Responsibilities:

  1. Management of People: Effectively apply OPPD¿s Management Leadership Practices (MLP¿s) in planning and assigning the work of Operations and all station support staff. Build and maintain a competent team through effective recruiting, selection, and ongoing development.
  • Managerial Planning ¿ Determine how to achieve the goals of the unit/team through effective metrics, individual task assignment to the appropriate department, seeking input from their crew and employee development.

  • Assist Manager, Station Operations in hiring of new plant operators and Shift Supervisors.

  • Managerial Meetings ¿ Lead managerial meetings with crews and Station staff on a defined schedule to provide alignment of Station activities and priorities / coaching opportunities/ context setting/ development/ clarity of task / and feedback.

  • Coaching/Feedback for Competency of Role ¿ Provide coaching and constructive, critical feedback to crewmembers to continuously improve their competency in the work of their role in the Department.

  • Manager Leadership Practices ¿ Reinforce, monitor, and hold subordinates accountable for the effective application of OPPD¿s Manager Leadership Practices / Behaviors and the leadership Framework.

  • PEA ¿ Conduct and complete performance appraisal conversations and documentation requirements.

  1. Functional Planning & Execution: Accountable to develop and implement plans (Typically 1 year or less in scope) to achieve assigned KA¿s.

¿ Direct the activities of operating personnel assigned to the shift to ensure the plant and all related generating and auxiliary equipment is operated in a safe, efficient, and continuous manner within the manufacturers¿ specifications and in accordance with established written procedures, equipment specifications and proper plant practices.

¿ Accountable for the safety and performance of all personnel on-site.

¿ Review and support integrated work management schedule, oversee Operations development of tag outs to support online and offline maintenance activities, and modify model clearances for the units as necessary.

¿ Review work orders and approve the tagout of equipment for maintenance to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment.

¿ Frequently visit job sites and observe work in progress, critically assess the situation and work practices, and ensure that the jobs are completed safely and provide feedback on improvement opportunities.

¿ Lead the investigation of near misses, incidents and accidents looking for lessons learned, as well as recognizing good catches. Lead the development and implementation of apparent and root cause corrective actions.

¿ Lead and ensure correct documentation of all operating activities which includes the preparation and approval of logs, operating records, work schedules and timesheets.

¿ Schedule operating personnel and coordinate engineering, maintenance, and performance testing on all units.

¿ Monitor and ensure all equipment operates in accordance with state and federal rules, regulations, and standards.

¿ Evaluate abnormal situations as to their impact upon the surrounding environment and initiate actions necessary to protect the Company, employees, and the public.

¿ Work collaboratively with other generating stations, Energy Marketing, and Line Dispatching to ensure coordination of load demand and voltage in accordance with FERC policies.

¿ Monitor and report on the status of consumable usage abnormalities, operating inefficiencies of the Station by way of load and heat rate, and support efforts to improve cost savings.

¿ Monitor and track overtime requirements and mitigate, when possible, by using relief persons to cover shift.

¿ Supports the Operations and Training department goals and objectives by being a liaison between departments. Ensures all crewmembers have individualized development plans and are meeting or exceeding annual training requirements and striving to continuously improve performance.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

  • A minimum of eight years operations / engineering experience in a power plant.

  • Must possess management and administrative skills, demonstrated leadership capability, and the ability to effectively communicate in multiple mediums with others.

  • Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to interface with all levels within the organization.

  • Requires a high degree of mechanical ability, troubleshooting skills, and a thorough knowledge of all station equipment and operations.

  • Must have a strong commitment to personnel safety and human performance tool usage.

  • Valid driver¿s license.

  • Must possess a City of Omaha 1st Grade Stationary Engineers license within one year. (North Omaha Station only)

    Desired:

  • Previous experience in Operations, either as a Unit Operator, Shift Supervisor, or a supporting Engineer is highly desirable.

  • Experience in coal plant operations at plants with air quality control systems (AQCS).

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and activities.

  • Proven ability to develop lasting and effective professional relationships.

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office products.

  • Bachelor¿s Degree in Engineering or Physical Sciences
