General Responsibilities:

Responsible for providing legal counsel and services to the organization on a broad range of business matters. Perform contract review and negotiation support for professional engineering services. Identify and analyze legal issues, draft key documents, present clear recommendations, and assure legal compliance.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

General Responsibilities

  • Supervisory duties for one or more support staff.

  • Establishes collaborative relationships across the organization and specializes in one or more subject matter areas.

  • Suggest process improvements to aid in timely responses from the Legal department.

  • Research and analyze complex issues and prepare memos for both Chief Legal Officer (CLO) and non-attorney audiences.

  • Proactively seek opportunities to lead efforts and initiatives around improved practices associated with risk, compliance, or other legal aspects of our operations.

  • Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrates safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.

  • Serve as contact to Human Resources for employment law issues.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Business Operations & Risk Management

  • Provide legal advice with specialized focus on employment issues, business operations and risk management.

  • Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk. Be familiar with what could go wrong on a project and how to protect the Company. Be familiar with company risk policies.

  • Assist in a variety of training for non-attorney audiences on area of specialty.

  • Analyze and summarize complicated legal documents, including contracts.

  • Make suggestions for alterations of existing legal documents, including contracts.

  • Assist in the development of organization’s policies on industry-specific issues, corporate governance or regulatory affairs.

  • Make suggestions for alterations of existing legal documents and process.

  • Promote continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor quality standards and practices.

Litigation

  • Responsible for managing facets of the litigation facing the Company, with direction from the CLO.

  • Oversee initial investigations and provide legal analysis of litigation matters, prepare and file legal pleadings and documents.

  • Manage outside counsel to represent the organization in important litigation before courts and administrative tribunals, including preparing or reviewing the preparation of briefs and other court documents.

  • Responsible for the timely notification of appropriate insurance carriers of claims or circumstances.

  • Responsible for claims information reporting to CLO and Senior Management.

  • Develop and maintain training programs for a variety of legal topics for differing audiences, including topics related specifically to litigation.

  • Make suggestions for alteration of existing processes/procedures based on litigation experiences.

  • Provide prompt preliminary evaluation of claims and potential claims and to monitor evaluation as claim progresses.

  • Responsible for setting financial reserves for litigation, subject to review by the CLO.

  • Serve as company representative in claim and litigation activities including court proceedings, mediation, and arbitration.

  • Recommend to CLO and Senior Management settlement strategy for resolution of litigation and claims.

  • Negotiate with both internal and external parties on litigation issues or disputes

  • Assist in the development of the companies policies on industry-specific issues, compliance and litigation issues.

  • Responsible for subpoena response processes to ensure proper compliance with legal obligations to produce documents and information.

Contract Review Processes

  • Analyze and summarize complicated legal documents, including contracts.

  • Negotiate with outside parties on contractual issues or disputes.

Special Projects

  • Assist in the development of the company’s policies on industry-specific issues as requested by the CLO.

  • Work on task forces and committees with other corporate departments or operations personnel.

Requirements:

  • Juris Doctorate

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience. 8 to 10 years preferred.

  • Strong project management skills including the ability to work well under pressure and meet critical daily deadlines.

  • Excellent analytical, communication, diplomatic, research and writing, phone and customer service skills.

  • Demonstrates effective negotiating skills.

  • Efficient work habits, ability to manage multiple projects at one time.

  • Ability to explain complex legal issues to non-technical internal clients.

  • Licensed to practice law and eligible to secure a Kansas in-house license if currently licensed outside Kansas per Rule 712 of the Kansas Supreme Court

  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
