Professional Rank and Salary Range: Academic Advisement Assistant (SL-2) at $49,300; or Academic Advisor SL-3 at $55,200

Duration: Calendar Year (this position follows a 12-month calendar year)

Brief Description of Duties:

SUNY Morrisville is seeking an Academic Advisement Assistant or Advisor (dependent on qualifications) for our Chenango County Branch Campus located in Norwich, NY. This person will be responsible for providing comprehensive services to undergraduate and non-degree seeking students. The Academic Assistant or Advisor will assist students in developing academic plans, and course selections per semester that align to their educational and career goals ensuring students remain on-track toward degree or program completion. This person will play a critical role in student retention, persistence, and personal development through a combination of individual advising, tutoring, workshops, coaching, and collaboration with faculty and other primary staff at the Norwich and Morrisville campuses.

The Assistant level will perform tasks similar to the academic advisor level, but under close mentorship and guidance. Both levels report directly to the Director of the Norwich Campus.

SUNY Morrisville is proud to offer quality academic programs and services at Roger W. Follett Hall, 20 Conkey Avenue, on the Norwich campus in Chenango County, NY. The campus, in downtown Norwich, offers associate degree and certificate programs in select technical areas in Criminal Justice, Nursing, Business Administration, and Human Services, concurrent and dual enrollment programs for area high schools, and workforce development opportunities for area businesses.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Responsible for providing academic advising to all students at the Norwich Campus pursuing academic programs located at Norwich (including Nursing intent students), Nursing AAS, supporting caseloads of workforce development students, non-matriculating students, and prospective students.

  • Supporting first-year student onboarding and transition to college.

  • Identifying, advising, and supporting at-risk students.

  • Serving as the Academic Rebuild Program Student Success Coach/Advisor for the Norwich campus.

  • Coordinating with faculty on orientation and welcome events, informational sessions, faculty/staff orientation, registration days, major discovery days, and any academic celebration or community outreach with high schools.

  • Partnering, collaborating, and serving as the liaison to the Morrisville campus Registrar, Bursar's, and Financial Aid Offices to provide seamless coordination, on-campus representation, and conveying accurate information to Norwich students.

  • Teach a first-year experience (FYE) course as needed.

  • Monitor and evaluate student academic progress, provide guidance on academic policies, degree requirements, and access to institutional resources.

  • Assist students in exploring academic and career options, internships, or research opportunities.

  • Develop and facilitate workshops on topics such as academic planning, study skills, time management, and career exploration.

  • Maintain accurate records and advising notes of student interactions in Starfish.

  • Provide and coordinate tutoring services on the Norwich campus and in partnership with the Morrisville Campus Tutoring Services utilizing a cloud-based collaboration application (TEAMS).

  • Performs additional duties as assigned by the Director.

    Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

Academic Advisement Assistant (SL-2):

  • Bachelor's Degree

  • General experience in academic advisement, or a closely related area

Academic Advisor (SL-3):

  • Master's Degree

  • 2+ years of academic advising experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in progress (only for the SL-2 level)

  • Excellent communication skills including interpersonal, written, and oral presentation.

  • Demonstrated success in student engagement, advising, and support.

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with adult and traditional students on a rural campus.

  • Strong commitment to student success, retention, and persistence.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and protect student privacy and follow FERPA Laws.

  • Proficiency using academic support technologies such as Brightspace, Starfish, Banner, Student Information Systems, and Degree Audit

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, present self in a professional manner, and reflect the goals and mission/vision of the College.
