Job Description

This position will support process safety in the R&D Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) Pilot Plant and provide safety support for other R&D functional areas. The focus is process safety management for the API Pilot Plant and safe day-to-day operations. Improve overall safety performance partnering with R&D Operations & Engineering. This position will support projects of varying scope that encompass Process Safety Management (PHA’s, MOC, hazard identification and mitigation, auditing, and incident investigation), capital equipment purchases, risk assessments and other EHS programs and processes. The ideal candidate will have solid technical and scientific background and/or pharmaceutical plant experience. Also, he/she will have the capability to participate in detailed risk assessments/process safety reviews existing/new processes and engineering capital projects. Attention to detail and sound scientific problem solving will be fundamental to this role.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead Process Safety activities in alignment with AbbVie internal standards and OSHA PSM, examples include Process Safety Management, Process Hazard Analysis (PHA), Management of Change (MOC), Pre-startup Safety Review (PSSR) etc., tracking closure of action items, collect process safety metrics, develop and maintain site dashboard for key programs, monitors EHS improvement of assigned processes.

  • Facilitate PHAs, gather Process Safety Information, assess hazards and recommend approaches that reduce employee’s exposure to work hazards. Complete hazard screening of operational activities.

  • Ownership of Process Safety Management program elements, process safety procedures and training and other safety procedures/training as assigned. Review and revise procedures/training working with various teams within the organization.

  • Participate in Design Reviews and Direction Sets Reviews for production processes. Performing chemical hazard review, establish PPE requirements, identify safety concerns and ensure safe practices are and implemented to mitigate risk/safety concerns.

  • Collect process safety metrics and present performance indicators to business areas.

  • Provide technical support on process safety matters and site capital projects including regulatory interpretation. Provide input for Requests for Capital Expenditure (RCE) to ensure Process Safety and safety aspects are properly integrated during Front End Design Planning Process, product-transfer from site to site or Third Party, and changes/upgrades to existing processes and equipment.

  • Lead incident investigations, root cause determination and implementation of action plans.

  • Champion a culture of Process Safety excellence, lead initiatives to support/build a culture of safety through employee engagement and participation.

  • Support audit readiness, ensure that key EHS Technical programs at the site comply with applicable Process Safety requirements and corporate policies, utilize best-industry practices and best available techniques to identify and manage risk, and conform to company directives and standards.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemical Engineering plus 3-5 years related industry experience preferred or related discipline: chemistry, science, Environmental Health and Safety plus 3-5 years related industry experience. One to three years of experience Process Safety (pharmaceutical Pilot Plant or manufacturing) preferred.

  • Demonstrated experience in process safety and process safety management systems.

  • Ability to facilitate and lead Process Hazard Assessments; experience facilitating PHAs preferred.

  • Positive record of working effectively in a team environment; plan, organize, delegate and follow-up meeting goals and objectives. Personal skills to facilitate work in a cross-functional team environment.

  • Ability to influence, motivate, peers, supervisor, and middle management to meet set goals.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively interact with site employees at all levels. Strong written and verbal communication skills.

  • Strong problem-solving skills, sound judgment, communication skills

  • Ability to research, analyze, interpret regulations/standards: OSHA, PSM, NFPA etc.
