Job Description

We are looking for an experienced technical leader to join our Device Engineering management team and contribute to the development and launch of exciting new drug / device combination products.

Within Combination Product Development, the Device Engineering team is responsible for developing products informed by user needs and product requirements, completing feasibility and margin assessments, and ultimately supporting design and verification activities that result in robust delivery systems. The team provides both subject matter expertise (key engineering disciplines and functional subsystems) and technical leadership (overall technical program accountability) to support the cross-functional development team.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Direct management of a multi-disciplinary technical team consisting of mechanical, hardware, software and biomedical engineers

  • Develop and implement staffing plans for global pipeline development programs using both internal staff and external contract resources

  • Attract, develop and retain key technical talent aligned with AbbVie’s pipeline and technology needs

  • Translate outputs of early pipeline technology identification and device selection activities into detailed design and development under formal design control

  • Proactively manage global third-party development partners across a broad range of technologies and device types

  • Collaborate with cross-functional leadership and executive management to drive organizational excellence and process improvement

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical or similar)

  • 10 years of experience leading technical teams in the medical device / combination product industry

  • Detailed knowledge of combination product and drug development processes and practices (including design controls per 21 CFR 820.30 / ISO 13485 and ICH Quality Guidelines)

  • Working knowledge of human factors, systems engineering, GMP lab practices

  • Demonstrated record of design and development of a broad range of medical devices and / or combination products, from feasibility and landscaping through verification, submission and launch

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to clearly articulate development challenges and implementation strategies to stakeholders across a broad range of functional groups at all layers of the organization
